Area state senators hosted a virtual Budget Forum regarding the upcoming state budget earlier this month. Dr. Cohen suggested reform is needed to help protect the students in the district. It was announced earlier this month that 32 employees will be laid off and classes combined, due to state aid losses, contingency budget issues, and millions of dollars spent on the NAACP litigation seeking a ward system of voting. It’s not clear when the cuts will happen, but Reichlin-Melnick says he’s hopeful there won’t be cuts to education in the next state budget.
