A former county legislator has passed away. Gerry Bierker, who died Thursday, spent decades as a math teacher, and served as Clarkstown South High School principal. The Bardonia resident was active with Germonds Presbyterian Church in Bardonia and West Nyack Rotary. He served three four-year terms on the Legislature before retiring in 2012. His family is holding a private service for him, but it will be recorded and posted to the Germonds Presbyterian Church website. He was 81.
Half a Foot of Snow Falls on Rockland Thursday, Monsey Food Market Destroyed in Fire
About five or six inches of snow fell during the day Thursday, and that’s given way to a thin coating of ice overnight. Roads were passable but very treacherous in some areas. The weather didn’t stop Rockland fire volunteers from putting out a blaze in Monsey. Motty’s Supermarket on Main Street was destroyed in the fast-moving blaze which began just after noon Thursday. No injuries were reported.
Haverstraw Community Center Hosts a State Pop-up COVID Vaccination Site, Rockland Vaccinations Changed Due to Weather Delays

Meanwhile the state said yesterday the Federal government’s COVID-19 vaccine shipments for the last week through the 21st have been delayed due to the winter storms. Some doses have been held back, and a limited number of Pfizer vaccines left shipping facilities on Tuesday and Wednesday. As a result of the delay, the Rockland County Department of Health says the COVID-19 2nd dose vaccination clinics scheduled for Saturday 9 AM – 1 PM and Monday 9 AM – 6 PM have been rescheduled to Saturday, February 27th 9 AM – 1 PM and Monday, March 1st 9 AM – 6 PM.
COVID-19 by the numbers now, here in Rockland, we lost four more to COVID, the total is 871. We’ve got 48 hospitalized confirmed with coronavirus, and 1,518 active cases. Our total case count is 37,200, that’s 112 more than Thursday.
Rockland Hits EPA’s Top 30 Local Government list Green Power Users
Rockland County has been listed as No. 21 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 30 Local Government list of the largest green power users from the Green Power Partnership. County Executive Ed Day says Rockland and the County Sewer District use wind power from Engie Power & Gas, and that saves taxpayers big bucks…
RCC and the Rockland County Solid Waste Management Authority also benefit from their own contracts with Engie. Day says the move helps reduce the negative health impacts of air emissions from ozone, fine particles, acid rain, and regional haze.
