The snowy weather may have been the cause for several accidents in Ramapo yesterday. Ramapo Police had a rollover on Margetts Road in Chestnut Ridge, and another accident on Route 45 involving a car and a Rockland TOR bus. That one included several injuries, but no word on their extent.
NYS Police Investigate Fatal New Year’s Accident on I-287
New York State Police are investigating a fatal crash on the Thruway that killed a Spring Valley woman in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day. Troop T Commander, Major Jennifer Gottstine, says 26 year-old Mardochena Louis slammed a Mercedes into the back of a tractor trailer that had stopped in the right southbound lane in Chestnut Ridge to assist a car that had become disabled. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rockland County Medical Examiner. The incident occurred as a tow truck was loading the disabled car. Police say the driver of the tractor trailer had set up orange hazard triangles. He was uninjured, but a passenger in the Mercedes, 35 year-old Quinten Jackson, also of Spring Valley, was taken to Westchester Medical Center with multiple injuries in serious but stable condition.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said however, getting vaccinated is not only an individual responsibility, it’s a community obligation…
Cuomo said the state is designing portable, pop-up vaccination sites to bring to public housing authorities, churches and community centers around the state to help aid in the vaccination effort.
COVID-19 by the numbers now, here in Rockland, we lost four more to COVID since Thursday, the total count stands at 771. We’ve got four hospitalized being examined, another 75 there are confirmed cases, and a total of 2,293 active cases. Overall, we’ve had 27,510 reported cases, 317 more than Thursday.
Former Ramapo Supervisor John McAlevey Dies
Former Ramapo supervisor John McAlevey passed away Saturday. That’s according to supervisor Michael Specht. McAlevey served four terms as supervisor from 1966 to 1973 and was a decorated World War Two pilot. Specht said he started the Town Housing Authority, expanded the Town Parks from 23 to 650 acres, and established the Town’s lateral sewers. McAlevey was also Mayor of Sloatsburg and served on the MTA Board. He was predeceased by his wife, Marlene, a former East Ramapo teacher, who died in July 2019.
Report: Spring Valley Man Busted in CT Trying to Close Someone Else’s Bank Account
A Spring Valley man faces charges after allegedly using a fake ID to close another person’s bank account in Connecticut. The Connecticut Post says 19 year-old Lucas Jerome, along with 70 year-old Leroy Brown of Mount Vernon, were busted trying to get $200,000 from the account. Last week’s attempt fell apart when Jerome, posing as Brown’s grandson, reportedly was unable to remember his grandfather’s last name. Jerome was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny and carrying a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned in Bridgeport and held on $10,000 bond.
