NY’s Governor Declares Nation’s First Disaster Emergency Over Gun Violence
New York’s governor yesterday declared the nation’s first disaster emergency over gun violence here in the state. Andrew Cuomo said gun violence is a public health crisis, and it must be treated as such. Cuomo said with this executive order, the state will work with local governments to help them assess and roll out the reform plans they developed through the Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative…
A big part of the problem, according to Stony Point and Orange County Assemblyman Colin Schmitt, is the bail reform package that remains law in the state…
The governor wants to spend nearly $139 million in intervention and prevention programs, including those that provide at-risk youth summer jobs and community activity programs to get them off the streets. It also supports on-going gun violence prevention programs.
NY Boulders Start Three-Game Series with Tri-City ValleyCats, Lose Game One, 5-3
In Frontier League baseball…the New York Boulders are upstate for a three-game series that began last night against the Tri-City ValleyCats. With the Boulders leading 3-2 in the 5th, the ValleyCats had runners on the corners with two outs, and the Boulders were looking to get out of a jam…
And that was Joe Mixie with the call courtesy of the Tri-City ValleyCats radio network. That turned out to be a big out, but not big enough, as the ValleyCats would score three in the sixth, on their way to their sixth straight win, and ending the Boulders’ three-game winning streak. 5-3 was the final, Boulders lose. They play again tonight at 6:30.
GOP Straw Poll Pits Long Island Congressman Against NY Governor Cuomo
A former Westchester County Executive didn’t get much backing last week from other Republicans who decided a Long Island Congressman is their guy to run for governor of New York. Lee Zeldin was selected as the GOP’s “presumptive nominee” in a straw poll that gave him 85% of the vote. Western Ramapo and Orange County Assemblyman Karl Brabenec says Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, got nothing…
Rob Astorino got just 5%, and 10% of the Republican leadership didn’t even vote. At the moment, governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to run for a fourth term.
Stony Point Looks to Keep Camp Bullowa from Being Sold by Boy Scouts
The fate of a beloved Boy Scout campground in North Rockland has gotten a bit more complicated following news last week that the organization has reached an $850 million settlement with more than 60,000 men who allege sexual abuse by adults in scouting over several decades. The agreement is the first legal settlement stemming from many lawsuits against the Boy Scouts, which filed for bankruptcy last year. Camp Bullowa and two other Hudson Valley properties the Boy Scouts owns have been put up for sale. Stony Point supervisor Jim Monaghan says he’s spoken to county and state representatives and Conservation Land Preservation Groups with the hope that the property can be saved and kept the way it is…
NPR reported that under the terms of the agreement, local councils are expected to contribute at least $300 million to the settlement fund. A Facebook group called “Save Camp Bullowa” has nearly 1,000 members.
