The village of South Nyack is holding its first board of trustees meeting tonight since residents voted to dissolve the village last week. States Left Out of COVID Stimulus Agreement Reached Late Sunday in Washington
Congress late Sunday passed a one-day funding bill to keep the government afloat, and a vote on the $900 million COVID relief package agreed-to late Sunday is expected to come today. The agreement reportedly includes direct payments of $600 for qualifying Americans, a federal unemployment insurance bonus of $300 a week, more money for businesses who need to pay rent and their employees, and vaccine distribution funds. On Friday before the deal was made in Washington, Rockland Business Association CEO Al Samuels said the bill’s exclusion of funding for the states would be especially harmful to New York, which needs to start working on the next fiscal year’s budget…
The agreement also includes $4 billion in funding for the beleaguered MTA, which had threatened massive cuts and the elimination of service west of the Hudson without significant help. COVID-19 by the numbers now, here in Rockland, we lost four more to COVID, the total count stands at 739. We’ve got three hospitalized being tested, another 86 there are confirmed cases, and a total of 2,130 active cases. Overall, we have a total of 24,983 reported cases, 196 more than Friday.
South Nyack Man Indicted in Fatal Shooting of Nyack Man
A South Nyack man has been indicted by a Rockland grand jury for the murder of a 35-year-old Nyack man last month. D-A Tom Walsh said 26 year-old Wendy Jean faces one count of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, in the death of Gregory Dubuisson, who was shot twice. That’s according to the Journal News. Jean faces a maximum of 25 years to life in state prison if convicted.
Wesley Hills Homeowner Cited After Teen Dies From Slip and Fall into Mikvah
The owner of a Wesley Hills home where a 14 year-old boy died last week has been issued a building violation for having an illegal mikvah, or a Jewish ritual bath. That’s according to the Journal News. Mayor Marshal Katz said the village was unaware of the mikvah at the Baldwin Court home of Shimon Weiss before the boy’s death. The incident was first reported by VIN, a Jewish news website. Mordechai Paneth reportedly slipped and fell on some stairs into the mikvah, and wasn’t found for about an hour. Ramapo police had no other details, and said their investigation is continuing.
O&R Gives $4,000 to Spring Valley Salvation Army
Orange & Rockland Utilities has given $4,000 to the Salvation Army in Spring Valley to replace the proceeds from two annual holiday programs O&R sponsors to benefit the community’s needy. O&R spokesman Mike Donovan says the pandemic forced the company’s annual “Angel Tree” toy drive and “Red Kettle Bell Ringing” fundraiser at Palisades Center to be cancelled this year…
Local Salvation Army offices work with O&R throughout the year on “The Neighbor Fund,” O&R’s program that provides home-heating assistance for customers who find themselves unable to pay their bills because of emergency financial situations.
