More needs to be done in the East Ramapo school district, though the signing of the monitors’ increased powers bill signed last week is a good start. That’s according to Rockland Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski who sponsored the bill in the Assembly, who says the new law levels the playing field between the district’s public and private school community, but more help is needed…

The bill gives the East Ramapo Central School District monitors the ability to override various actions by the Board of Education and gives them better access to district records. Earlier this year the method of voting for the board in East Ramapo was changed from an at-large system to one that is ward-based after legal action was filed by the local NAACP claiming the old system was unfair.

The first cases of West Nile virus detected in Rockland mosquitoes have been confirmed by the New York State Department of Health. The infected mosquitoes were collected from traps in Orangetown and Clarkstown late last month as part of the county’s ongoing mosquito surveillance efforts. No human cases have been reported thus far. A bite from a West Nile Virus-infected mosquito can cause serious illness, and in some cases, death, though the chances of a person getting sick are minimal for those under the age of 50. West Nile can cause serious complications, including neurological diseases, or flu-like illness with fever, headache and body aches, nausea, and occasionally a skin rash and swollen lymph glands. If you missed any of the fireworks displays over the weekend, you can still catch some this week. Haverstraw’s fireworks was moved to tonight at Bowline Park, and Clarkstown’s fireworks display and summer concert series will be held this Wednesday at Nanuet High School.

147 firearms were turned in to law enforcement at Wednesday’s gun buyback program in Nanuet conducted by the state Attorney General’s office, Rockland’s D.A. and the Clarkstown Police Department. Clarkstown supervisor George Hoehmann says some of these guns could have fallen into the wrong hands…

Since taking office in 2019, Attorney General Letitia James has taken nearly 1,300 firearms out of communities through similar gun buyback events.
