Rockland Sheriff Concerned Over Spike in Gun Incidents

Gun violence seems to be making a comeback of late. There was a fatal shooting on Memorial Day in Spring Valley in which a 19 year-old was killed, an Airmont man recently was waiting to get into an Austin, Texas bar was fatally struck by a bullet, and it seems like every day we’re hearing of another shooting in the city. It’s also weighing heavily on the mind of Rockland’s Sheriff Lou Falco…

Time.com says 2020 was one of the worst years for gun violence on record in America, and it’s continued into 2021. They say stats show 19,402 gun fatalities in 2020 during the pandemic, while in 2019, there were nearly 4,000 fewer.

Rockland Community Tops State List for Lowest Vaccination Rate

A Rockland community is the worst in the state when it comes to getting vaccinated, and the county executive wants to beef those numbers up. Monsey tops the list of communities in the state with the lowest vaccination rate. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says health officials are increasing their efforts to combat vaccine hesitancy…

Spring Valley and Monroe in Orange County both are in the top five lowest vaccination rates in the state.

Juneteenth Celebration Comes to Spring Valley’s MLK Center Saturday

A ceremony is being held Saturday in Spring Valley to honor two men for their efforts in fighting COVID-19 and social justice. Rockland Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick is honoring Nathan Mungin, the Executive Director of the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center, and Willie Trotman, President of the Spring Valley chapter of the NAACP. The ceremony also is in celebration of Juneteenth, which marks the day that news of liberation came to Texas more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1st, 1863. African-Americans across Texas were informed of their freedom when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce on June 19th, 1865, that all slaves were free. The event is being held Saturday at 2:30pm at the MLK Center in Spring Valley.

New Hiking Trail to Open Friday Connecting Hook Mountain to Nyack Beach State Park

A new hiking trail officially opens tomorrow that will connect the summit of Hook Mountain with the riverfront at Nyack Beach State Park in Upper Nyack. The trail took several years to complete, and is surrounded by various plants and wildlife in a tranquil setting. Bob Stien is on the board of the group “Friends of Rockland Lake & Hook Mountain” and says it took lots of land acquisition and $3.1 million to make it all happen…

The new trail opens with a ceremony at noon Friday in the lower parking lot at Nyack Beach. If you’d like to attend the opening celebration and take a guided walk you have to RSVP. Send an email to event organizer Melody Partrick at melodypartrick@gmail.com.

New York Boulders Blast Todd Frazier, Sussex County Miners, 12-7

The New York Boulders took on former Met and Yankee Todd Frazier and the first-place Sussex County Miners in Pomona last night for the second game of a three-game series. With two on in the bottom of 7th, the batter was Boulder outfielder Jack Sundberg…

And that was Jacob Kronberg with the call…the Boulders scored six runs in the inning and batted around the lineup. Frazier went one for three with a solo home run in the ninth, but it was too late for the Miners, the final score, 12-7 the Boulders. The Boulders and Miners go at it again tonight.
