New York Celebrates Reaching 70 Percent Vaccinated Threshold

With the state having eclipsed the 70 percent vaccinated threshold yesterday, the governor lifted many of New York’s COVID restrictions. Andrew Cuomo said all the state-mandated restrictions on commercial, social settings, sports and recreation, construction, manufacturing, and retail buildings are no more…

However, CDC guidelines are still in effect in many situations. People who aren’t vaccinated must still wear a mask. And large-scale indoor events venues, schools, public transit, homeless shelters, jails, nursing homes, adult care facilities and health care settings must continue to follow the CDC’s existing COVID-19 health protocols.

The celebration of the 70 percent milestone saw many state landmarks, including the Tappan Zee Bridge, illuminated in blue and gold last night. Memorial Park in Nyack and nine other locations across the state blasted fireworks, as well. The celebrations also honored New York’s essential workers.

The state legislature wrapped up last week with historic legislation to help the East Ramapo Central School District. Rockland state senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick says with additional oversight powers, state monitors can make sure the school board does what’s best for public school kids, and he expects the governor will sign it into law…

Stony Point and Orange County assemblyman Colin Schmitt voted for the bill, but he was disappointed that some bills didn’t get passed before the end of the session…

Schmitt says he would also like to see kids not have to wear masks in schools.

Stony Point Sets Public Hearings for July on Smoking and Vaping, and Marijuana Sales

The town of Stony Point has set two public hearings for next month, one is on a law that would ban vaping and smoking on town properties and parks, and another on a law that would let the town opt out of legalizing marijuana sales in town. Supervisor Jim Monaghan says it’s not a moral issue, it’s a quality-of-life issue…

The hearings are scheduled for Tuesday July 13th. If the town decides to opt out of legal pot sales they could always change their mind and opt in later.

That’s tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or while supplies last. The Office for the Aging is located at 50 Sanatorium Road, Building B.
