Rockland County officials are declaring an end to the measles outbreak that began last year and resulted in 312 confirmed cases. Two incubation periods, a total of 42 days, have passed since the last person with the measles was reported.
Rockland Withdraws from HUD’s Fair Housing Assistance Program
Rockland County has withdrawn from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Fair Housing Assistance Program. The move gives the county a chance to restructure and strengthen Rockland’s existing Fair Housing program. Rockland County Executive Ed Day calls HUD’s requirements “onerous” and not the best fit for the county…
Day says the county could get re-certification from HUD and join the program again in the future. The Human Rights Commission will be hosting their next Fair Housing Symposium on October 16th at RCC.
New City Man Still Facing Charges in Deaths of One Year-old Twins, No Grand Jury Action Yet
The New City man whose 1-year-old twins died in an overheated car while he was at work is still facing second-degree manslaughter and other charges. 39 year-old Juan Rodriguez was in court in the Bronx yesterday, and learned that no grand jury action has been taken on the case yet. His attorneys have been seeking to have the case dismissed. Rodriguez has claimed he thought he had dropped the twins off at day care before going to work at the Bronx VA hospital.
No Movement Yet at Former Stony Point Sheetrock Plant Sold Last Year
No nibbles yet for the U.S. Gypsum property in North Rockland that was sold last summer. The German company that took over the Chicago-based U.S. Gypsum, which closed its Stony Point plant nine years ago, still hasn’t made any plans for the property. Stony Point supervisor Jim Monaghan says it would be great if the plant could be back on the tax rolls and creating jobs for the area…
Monaghan says there are some environmental issues that have to be cleaned up. The plant once produced sheetrock and employed up to 300 people until it closed in 2010.
Nanuet Supermarket Reportedly Closing Today
The Nanuet Fairway Market is closing, its last day reportedly is today. That’s according to a note left yesterday on its doors, thanking shoppers for their support over the last six years. DailyVoice.com says the note cited the closing of Sears and Macys at the Shops of Nanuet for decreased traffic in the store. Employees are reportedly being offered jobs at other stores nearby.
