12- to 17-year-old New Yorkers who have yet to get vaccinated for COVID-19 can win a full scholarship to a SUNY or CUNY college beginning today. It’s the latest prize Governor Andrew Cuomo has pulled out of the COVID swag-bag to entice those who haven’t yet gotten the shot. Cuomo says winners will receive a full scholarship to any public college or university, and that includes tuition, room and board…
Winners will be selected in a random drawing each Wednesday, with 10 winners a week over the next five weeks.
COVID-19 by the numbers now, here in Rockland, no new deaths, the total unchanged since last Monday at 957. We’ve got four hospitalized confirmed with coronavirus, and 202 active cases. Our total case count is 46,809, that’s 16 more than Wednesday. And the total number of vaccine doses administered – 212,891 that’s up 1,568 since the last report Tuesday.

New York Boulders baseball gets underway tonight…the team is gearing up for opening day. Catcher Phil Capra of North Salem was drafted by the Mets in 2018 but was released last May. Capra says his first season with the Boulders is full of promise…

Three area state lawmakers whose districts cover the East Ramapo School District all agree, more needs to be done to help the kids there get a better education. But they’re not entirely in agreement yet on how that can happen. State senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick says school district monitors should have the power to help students if the school board isn’t acting in their interest…
Rockland assemblyman Ken Zebrowski says the bills would help East Ramapo students get a better education…
And while Assemblyman Mike Lawler says he supports the Reichlin-Melnick / Zebrowski bill, he says it doesn’t go far enough, and the tension between the public and private school communities is only getting worse…
The state’s legislative session ends on June 10th, so it’s unclear whether the anything could get done this year. News 12 says parents rallied outside district offices yesterday to protest the district’s alleged failure to track hundreds of students who failed to attend classes.

If the COVID rates keep improving, all New York schools could re-open this fall for full in-person learning. Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday September could mean the end of at-home Zoom learning and back to the books as we know it…
Cuomo says the decision will be revisited if the numbers worsen.
