Voters Approve School Budgets in East Ramapo, Suffern Central School Districts

Voters in the East Ramapo Central School District approved the $273 million budget for the 2021-22 academic year. 63 percent voted in favor of the plan, which brings no increase in taxes for the year without cutting any music, arts, athletics and extra-curricular programming and adds enhanced programming for English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities.

Voters in the Suffern Central School District passed their budget with just over 73 percent approving the nearly $145 million spending plan. That comes with about a one percent increase in taxes. Proposition 2 passed easily, with 81 percent voting to let the district use reserve funds to fix roofs at Cherry Lane Elementary and Suffern Middle School and replace steam boilers at RP Connor Elementary School. Jennifer Hodge, Darrell Fraiser and Marlo Dickman each won three-year terms to the Board of Education.

Rockland’s other school districts vote next Tuesday.

NY Enters Tax Grievance Period

The state Department of Taxation and Finance says you can’t grieve assessments from prior years, only the current assessment. There is no cost to grieve an assessment and you don’t have to hire a lawyer. In general, the deadline, called Grievance Day, is the fourth Tuesday in May, but you should confirm the date with your assessor or municipality.

CDC Committee Expected to Grant Emergency Use Approval for Pearl River-based Pfizer’s COVID Vaccine for kids 12-15

The CDC’s vaccine advisory committee is expected today to approve Pearl River-based Pfizer’s COVID vaccine for kids ages 12 to 15 on an emergency use basis. If approved, shots could be ready for distribution here in New York as soon as tomorrow.

COVID-19 by the numbers now, here in Rockland, the death count is unchanged since yesterday at 955. We’ve got 11 hospitalized confirmed with coronavirus, and 343 active cases. Our total case count is 46,564, that’s 11 more than Tuesday.

Area Lawmaker Looks to Help Independent Pharmacies Survive

Independent mom-and-pop pharmacies are getting crushed by their large chain store competitors, and a local state senator was New York to do something about it. Skoufis is hoping to get something done in the last five remaining weeks of the legislative session. PBMs cover about 80% of the prescriptions written in this country.
