A wake is being held tomorrow for the 16 year-old killed Thursday in an accident in New City that Clarkstown Police believe was alcohol-related. Vlad Hvalyk, a junior at Clarkstown North High School, was a passenger in a car driven by 18 year-old Alan Mendoza, who was jailed on DWI and other charges. A GoFundMe page set up to help pay medical bills and funeral costs has been set up for Hvalyk. It’s already raised $7,000 more than its $50,000 goal. His wake is tomorrow afternoon at Higgins Funeral Home in New City. A funeral service is set for Thursday morning at St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Church in Spring Valley. If you have information on the accident, contact the Clarkstown Police Detective Bureau at 845-639-5840. Suffern High School sophomore Jacqueline Zangrilli was killed in a car crash last month in Montebello. The 17 year-old at the wheel in that accident has been charged with manslaughter, DWI, vehicular manslaughter and other felonies.

Stony Point Planning Board to Discuss Eagle Bay Tonight, Town Board to Meet In-Person

The Stony Point Planning Board is holding a Workshop Meeting tonight on the Eagle Bay condo project’s site plan application. Supervisor Jim Monaghan says there are still many concerns with the development…

The meeting begins at 6pm tonight and is being held online. There’s also a town board meeting tonight at 7, that’s being held in-person at the Rho Building on Clubhouse Lane.

Two Rockland School Districts Holding Budget Votes Today

East Ramapo and the Suffern Central school districts are holding budget votes and elections today. Most New York school districts will have elections next Tuesday May 18th, but East Ramapo and Suffern want to avoid conflicting with Shavuot, a Jewish holiday that ends next Tuesday at sundown. East Ramapo’s $273 million spending plan for the upcoming school year won’t increase taxes though it is about $28 million higher than the current budget. Suffern’s proposed budget is around $145 million with a tax hike of less than 1%. There’s also a referendum that seeks to take up to $4.8 million from capital reserves for building repairs and upgrades. Three of Suffern’s school board seats are up for grabs. East Ramapo’s board was elected in a special ward-voting election last February.

Indian Point to Test Sirens Tuesday Morning

Indian Point will be testing their emergency notification sirens today around 10:30. Though Indian Point was shut down April 30th, there are still radioactive materials at the site. The plant had been in operation since 1962.

NY Governor Concerned Over Drop-off Rate in COVID Vaccinations

New York’s governor, and those around the country, are concerned over the drop-off in vaccination rates. Governor Andrew Cuomo says those in the 65 to 74 age group have the highest vaccination rate, while those who are younger tend to be more resistant to getting the shot…

In response to reports that summer camps in New York are shutting their doors to people who get the shot, Cuomo says he wants to propose a law that forbids discrimination against those who get the vaccine.

COVID-19 by the numbers now, here in Rockland, for the first time in a week we have COVID deaths to report, three over the weekend, so the total now is 955. We’ve got 12 hospitalized confirmed with coronavirus, and 343 active cases. Our total case count is 46,553, that’s 42 more than Monday.
