The demolition of the old Tappan Zee Bridge has been rescheduled for tomorrow morning at 10am. Traffic between exits 11 (Route 9W in Nyack) and 9 (Route 9 Tarrytown) on the Thruway will be stopped for about an hour starting at ten AM tomorrow, and the Hudson River’s main navigation channel will be shut down, as well, from 8:30 to 11:30. If you’re going to go to Piermont to watch, you should get there by 9am. The Ferry Road pier is just over a mile long. Piermont Police say you can park in Lot D and the River Lot or on the side streets. Again, it’s only open to pedestrians, not to car traffic.

The bridge isn’t the only Thruway remnant meeting its demise. They’re dismantling the Harriman toll plaza starting today, though traffic should not be impacted just yet.Published reports say the 13-lane toll plaza will come down in phases over the coming weeks. Initially, there will be no changes in traffic patterns through the area. It’s the final piece of the conversion of the ticketing system to all-electronic tolling.

About 100 people came out last week to the Town of Ramapo’s first Town Asset Review Committee, or TARC, to discuss the future of five properties in town. Ramapo supervisor Michael Specht says some of the properties that need further evaluation include the Tilcon Quarry in Suffern, the Ramapo Cultural Arts Center in Spring Valley and the so-called Burgess Meredith property off Camp Hill Road in Pomona, which many had hoped would be left alone…

Specht says the site needs some restoration work, and the Historical Society of Rockland County may be interested in preserving the site. Another TARC meeting is slated for next month.     

Should 16 and 17-year-olds be allowed to pre-register to vote before they turn 18 years old? Rockland State Senator David Carlucci thinks so, and he’s sponsoring legislation that could come to a floor vote today, as a part of a package of election reform bills…

Rockland County Board of Elections Commissioner, Democrat Kristen Zebrowski Stavisky, agrees it is important to encourage and increase voter participation. 13 states and the District of Columbia already let 16 and 17-year-olds pre-register.
