Plastic Bag Ban Now in its 6th Month…is Your Local Store Recycling Them?

New York’s plastic bag ban has now been in effect about six months. It got started last spring, but when COVID started the ban was temporarily shelved. It went into effect permanently in October, but some stores in our area are apparently not taking them back as they should be. Howard Phillips heads up Rockland Green and says returning the bags to the stores is the best way to get rid of them …

Phillips says if you come across a store that should be taking the bags back, call your local town hall and let them know.

Proposed Starbucks in Clarkstown Delayed, but Still on Track

NY Boulders to Face Team Israel in July Before Japan Olympics

Team Israel is coming to town this summer to train with and play against the New York Boulders just weeks before the Olympics open in Japan…

Condolences Pour in for Fallen Spring Valley Firefighter Jared Lloyd

Jared Lloyd, a 15-year veteran of Spring Valley’s Columbians Fire Engine Co. No. 1 was identified yesterday as the firefighter killed in the fire that leveled the “Evergreen Court Home for Adults” assisted-living facility in the village. He was 35 years old. Lloyd was among the first on the scene early Tuesday morning when the fire broke out. While the Rockland Medical Examiner’s Office still had more work to do following the completion of an autopsy, County Executive Ed Day said in a press conference yesterday morning we all need to be there for those who are grieving…

Rockland’s Director of Fire and Emergency Services Chris Kear said finding the body after the building collapsed was a major challenge…

Sheriff Lou Falco said he is working with a number of agencies to investigate what caused the blaze…

One of the residents taken to an area hospital was still listed in critical condition, others suffered minor injuries and were taken to other assisted living facilities. One Evergreen Court resident died, but no information was released about him. Two firefighters were injured, one of them spent the night at the hospital with elevated carbon monoxide levels in his blood.

NYS Police Searching for Driver Who Reportedly Left Scene of Fatal Thruway Crash

New York State Police are looking for the driver of a rental Toyota they believe sideswiped a tractor trailer on the Thruway near Airmont earlier this month, causing it to swerve and topple over, killing the driver. 38 year-old Victor Lopez died in the incident on March 12th. Published reports say the driver of the Toyota fled the scene on foot, but New York State police have the car and are processing it for evidence. The driver of another truck that was struck by Lopez’s truck was uninjured.
