Rockland Cider Works to Come to Orangetown Town Board in June

Discussion with the Orangetown town board and a local cidery is being pushed off another month. Rockland Cider Works in Orangeburg has been bouncing between legal actions looking to keep its operation going, but some neighbors in the residential area stand in opposition. Supervisor Teresa Kenny says the company was originally supposed to come before the board, possibly with a new application, early next week…

To continue operating as-is would require a zone change but many locals aren’t happy with the noise, increased traffic and decreased property values. Rockland Cider Works is located at the Van Houten Farms site off Sickletown Road.

NY Governor Assures State will Remain “Safe Harbor For Women” and Abortion Rights

Rockland Sheriff Concerned Over Pro-Palestinian Protests in NYC

Rockland’s top law enforcement official is concerned. The number of rallies around the country, mainly on college campuses, are on the rise. They’re rallying in support a free Palestine, and in some cases the rallies are turning aggressive and violent against Jews and Israel’s supporters. Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco says while peaceful protests are fine, social media and other activities are being monitored to pre-empt any violence that may spill over to our area…

Rockland is home to three colleges. Two of them, St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill and Dominican University in Orangeburg, are both located in Orangetown. Supervisor Teresa Kenny says she’s not yet that concerned…

Hundreds of protesters have been arrested at Columbia University and City College of New York since late Tuesday, and more have been taken into custody at UCLA and elsewhere. In a statement, the City University of New York said they are continuing to survey damage to City College’s Admin Building, and other locations on campus where demonstrators smashed glass doors, graffitied walls, painted-over cameras and ransacked property. The cost of repairs has yet to be determined.

News 12, meanwhile, is reporting the Pro-Palestinian protests have made their way into the Hudson Valley. They report SUNY New Paltz had people setting up tents and signs on the campus’ lawn calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. That started early yesterday afternoon. The school’s president spoke with the demonstrators, and told them their actions were in violation of school rules but he intends to maintain an open dialog with them. The University said hatred, bigotry, racism, intolerance, antisemitism, Islamophobia or violence on campus will not be tolerated.

Lawler Antisemitism Bill Passes the House, Moves to Senate Next

A bill aimed at curbing antisemitism, sponsored by a Hudson Valley congressman, yesterday passed the House of Representatives by a wide, bi-partisan margin, 320 to 91. 70 Democrats and 21 Republicans opposed the measure. The “Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023” was introduced by Rockland Congressman Mike Lawler of the 17th district, who says he’s pleased many crossed the aisle to support the legislation…

Lawler’s bill would codify the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. All schools that get federal funds must comply with Title VI. It next goes to the Senate for a vote, and if it passes there, to the president. Rockland’s annual Yom Hashoah commemorations, held to honor the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust, are scheduled Monday and Tuesday in New City.
