W.H.O. Concerned as Measles Rise Globally, RC Exec Fights to Fend off Repeat of Outbreak of ’18
The World Health Organization is very concerned about the increasing number of measles cases around the world. There were 170,000 cases in 2022, but that nearly doubled last year to more than 320,000 cases. The W-H-O says the number of cases has exploded in just the first few months of 2024. Rockland was the epicenter of a measles outbreak in October 2018 that lasted nearly a year. Rockland County Executive Ed Day is not eager to see that happen again…
Children who don’t get vaccinated risk serious illness, particularly those under age 5, who are at highest risk for severe complications including pneumonia, encephalitis and death. Measles can also put children at higher risk for other potentially fatal childhood diseases by causing their immune systems to break down.
Don’t Sell Weed Without a License in New York – the Governor’s Coming After You
If you’re selling weed in New York State without a license, the governor is coming for you. Earlier this month, Governor Kathy Hochul said the fiscal year 2025 budget would include new initiatives to shut down any cannabis shop participating in illegal activities…
Rockland Sheriff Lou Falco says illegal sales of pot have been an issue here in the county, and the problem is that the cannabis laws were flawed right from the start…
Hochul admits illegal shops will not disappear overnight. But once a padlock is placed on their door and the legal process starts, the Governor says they won’t be able to sell their illegal products and communities will see change.
Polls Open Tonight on Bond Issue for New North Rockland Fire Station
Residents of the Thiells-Roseville Fire District in North Rockland will be voting tonight on a $24 million bond issue to pay for a new fire station. The polls will be open from 6pm-9pm tonight. News 12 says the $24.3 million bond referendum would pay for 4.8 acres of land about 500 yards from the current station on Route 202 and the construction of a new two-story, 23,000-square foot fire station. Estimated costs to the average homeowner would be about $191. The Thiells Fire Department has been operating from an outdated facility on Route 202 for decades. The building’s been around since 1960, and does not meet some modern state codes.
TikTok Faces U.S. Ban, WRCR Market Analyst says it Won’t Happen Anytime Soon
A law that could lead to a national ban of TikTok or require the Chinese-owned app to be sold to an American company cleared the Senate last week and was signed by the president Wednesday, but China is calling foul. Under the legislation the company, ByteDance, must sell its stake in TikTok within a year. The Chinese government would have to approve the sale, and that’s not likely. WRCR market analyst Ken Mahoney of Mahoney Asset Management in Chestnut Ridge says the 170 million American users aren’t likely to soon lose access to the popular social media platform…
TikTok has already vowed to challenge the law in court, calling it unconstitutional. According to the Associated Press, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson yesterday said China firmly rejects the U.S. law, particularly the aid the same law gave to Taiwan. The spokesman noted the “legislation undermines the principles of market economy and fair competition…[revealing] the bullying nature” of the United States, and added China will take forceful steps to defend its own security and development interests. TikTok is the 4th largest social media site in the U.S., behind Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
