Dozens of Weapons off the Streets After Buyback Progam in Spring Valley Last Week
Scores of weapons are off the streets thanks to a gun buyback program last week held by the Rockland County Sheriff’s office. DailyVoice.com said the haul included four assault rifles. Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco says it’s helpful to hold these programs…
In addition to the assault rifles, the sheriff’s office got 29 handguns, 32 rifles and shotguns, two antique non-working guns, and several swords and other edged weapons.
Report: RCC Fires President After Less Than a Year on the Job
Less than a year on the job and the head of a local college has already been let go. That’s according to Patch.com, which reported yesterday afternoon that Rockland Community College’s new president, Dr. Lester Edgardo Sandres Rápalo, was fired after just 11 months. RCC has been wrestling with financial issues, layoffs and various cost-cutting measures implemented after an $8 million shortfall was discovered. A spokesperson for RCC told WRCR yesterday the college would issue a statement in the next 24 to 48 hours.
NYS Legislature Wrapping up Session Today or Tomorrow
The New York State legislature is expected to wrap up its session today or tomorrow. Assemblyman Karl Brabenec of the 98th District, covering western Ramapo and portions of Orange County, says major bills that didn’t get absorbed into the state budget, and local bills, will take most of their attention between now and the end of session…
Among the bills that may or not get passed before session ends are some that deal with kids and social media, bottle refunds, the New York HEAT Act, and the COVID review commission.
Rockland Stop & Shops Waiting to See Whether They’ll Remain Open or be Shut Down
Stop & Shop supermarkets in the Northeast are waiting to see if they’ll remain open or be shut down, following an announcement late last month from its parent company that it would be closing under-performing stores. There’s one off Route 303 in Orangeburg, and Orangetown Supervisor Teresa Kenny says while she lives on the other side of town and usually grocery shops elsewhere…
WRCR market analyst Ken Mahoney of Mahoney Asset Management in Chestnut Ridge says while some stores are closing, others will get upgraded…
The company didn’t say how many of its nearly 400 stores would be shuttered. There are three other Stop & Shop locations in Rockland: New City, Nanuet and West Haverstraw.
