No One Injured After Fire Strikes Nanuet Nursing Home

Scary moments but thankfully no one was injured after a fire struck a nursing home in Nanuet. Clarkstown Police say the fire began at the Northern Manor Nursing Home on North Middletown Road Friday night just before 11pm. Clarkstown Police Detective Norman Peters says the fire was found in the basement laundry room area…

Volunteer firefighters from New City, West Nyack and Pearl River all assisted, as did Rockland Paramedics, Nanuet Ambulance and others. The Clarkstown Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.

A Spring Valley man has been charged with a hate crime assault after a food delivery was made to the wrong address Thursday on Old Turnpike Road in Monsey. Ramapo Police Detective Lieutenant Christopher Franklin says 32 year-old Wensley Volcy had trouble finding the address as entered, which was incorrect, and then got into a dispute with the person who ordered the food. Franklin says Volcy used antisemitic language toward the victim, who had attempted to take a picture of the delivery man’s license plate. Franklin says the driver placed the vehicle in reverse and intentionally struck the victim and then fled the scene. Detectives located Volcy and his car the next day, he was arrested and charged with second degree Assault as a Hate Crime, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident. He was arraigned with bail set at $5,000. He was sent to the Rockland County Jail. The victim sustained minor injuries but refused medical attention.


A Bronx woman was arrested in Ramapo Saturday after allegedly causing a chain reaction car accident that sent a parked car into a house. Ramapo Police say the 38 year-old unidentified woman was driving without a license around 11:30AM when she lost control, struck a parked SUV pushing it tonto the garage of the house, causing structural damage. She was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. She is due back in Ramapo Court later this month. The road and home location were not identified.


A Long Island man faces sentencing after being busted in an undercover sex sting by the Rockland County District Attorney’s office. D-A Tom Walsh says 56 year-old Daniel Waxman of Cedarhurst pleaded guilty Thursday to First Degree Attempted Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors. Walsh says in May last year Waxman chatted online with an undercover investigator from his office posing as a fourteen-year-old girl. Walsh says they agreed to meet to engage in sexual conduct, and he was arrested by his investigators and the Ramapo Police Department. Waxman is scheduled for sentencing in July, but Walsh did not indicate what the punishment might be.

Rockland County Partially Activates Emergency Operations Center

The County of Rockland has partially activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and says they are maintaining communication with the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. Residents are urged to only call 911 in case of an emergency. Safety information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency can be found here. There is a possibility of aftershocks to occur for the next 24-48 hours.

News Briefs: Pot Dealer Gets 17 Years in Prison, NY Passes Second Extender Bill with No Budget Deal in Place

A Rockland County marijuana dealer was sentenced yesterday to 17 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to several charges connected to a brutal beating and robbery of a victim in New City three years ago. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, says 38 year-old Hawthorne resident, Wayne Hicks, also known as “Weez,” directed two separate acts of violence to support his drug business. In one of them, Williams says Hicks had his brother beat up a man in a New City home, directing the beating over a video chat. The victim was forced to strip naked, his stuff was stolen, and he was then beaten with a baseball bat, belts, and slashed and stabbed with a large knife. In addition to the 17 years in prison, Hicks got five years of supervised release.
