Today is Halloween and while the weather looks like it won’t be a problem, there are always safety issues that have local law enforcement concerned. Rockland Sheriff Lou Falco says they check ahead of time on homes where there are people on probation, to make sure they don’t answer the door to give out candy to trick-or-treaters. Falco has some advice for parents and what they should be doing as they head out with their kids tonight…

Falco says spiked candy issues are extremely rare, but it doesn’t hurt to check to be sure.

The Rockland County winter warming center in Pomona is ready to open starting in November. The facility is available to people who need a place to warm up when the wind chill drops below 35° Fahrenheit. On December 1st, the center will be open every night, with daytime operations triggered if the wind chill again falls below that same temperature. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says it’s more than just a place to keep warm…

The center will operate into April, with transportation to the Warming Center provided from several locations in the county including Nyack, Haverstraw, Spring Valley and Pomona. See below for details, or call the Rockland County Department of Social Services at 845-364-2332 or 845-608-6670.

· Nyack: 7:00 p.m. at Broadway and Burd Street, in front of the First Reformed Church of Nyack.
· Haverstraw: 7:30 p.m. from the Commuter Parking Lot across from Village Hall.
· Spring Valley: 5:30 p.m., 6:10 p.m., and 8:15 p.m. at the Spring Valley Bus and Train Station.
· Pomona: 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Building L Bus Shelter on the Health Center campus.

Early voting runs from noon to 8pm today in seven locations around Rockland County. Hours Friday, Saturday and Sunday are 9-5pm. You can vote at any of the locations at the town halls in Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Orangetown and Ramapo, or at Stony Point’s Kirkbride Hall, the Fire Training Center in Pomona, or the Pascack Community Center in Nanuet. The past president of the Rockland County Volunteer Firefighters Association has died. The group announced on social media that Tom Bierds died on Monday. He was a current member of the Board of Directors and the ex-chief of the Knickerbocker Fire Engine Company #1 in Rockland Lake. He also served as a fire instructor at the Rockland County Fire Training Center, and was a member of several other organizations. Funeral information has not yet been released.
