Rockland County Executive Slams Proposed NYS “Faith-Based Affordable Housing Act”

Proposed state legislation from a New York City State Senator that would allow religious institutions to build affordable housing on their properties is being slammed locally. The proposal, known as the “Faith-Based Affordable Housing Act,” from New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes of Brooklyn, would by-pass local zoning requirements. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says that runs afoul of the state’s constitution…

District 40 State Senator, Democrat Pete Harckham, who covers Stony Point and portions of Orange County, has signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill. Both the Senate and Assembly versions of the bill are still in committee.

MTA Final Vote on Congestion Pricing Coming Wednesday

The MTA is expected to hold a final vote tomorrow on the proposed fee structure for its anticipated congestion pricing plan, which still faces several legal challenges from various groups. One of those legal challenges is coming from New York State Assemblyman Democrat Chris Eachus of the 99th District, covering Stony Point and parts of Orange County, who says our area isn’t being treated fairly…

Many groups are pushing for exemptions and discounts as the potential start date of June 15th nears. If the plan is approved, cars would be tolled $15 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street, while trucks could be charged up to $36, depending on size. From the west side of Manhattan, the George Washington Bridge would currently be tolled, but those using the Lincoln or Holland Tunnels would qualify for a partial credit.

News Briefs: Monsey Woman Killed in Car Crash, Nyack School Asst. Superintendent to Step Down, Congestion Pricing Final Vote to Come Wednesday

A Monsey woman was killed Friday after the vehicle she was in crashed off I-84 not far from Scranton, Pennsylvania. That’s according to TheYeshivaWorld.com. Serach Kagan was reportedly thrown from the car after it veered off the roadway and flipped, rolling down an embankment. She died at the scene. It’s not clear whether she was the driver or a passenger. Her husband suffered non-life-threatening injuries and their four children were unhurt. No other details were available.

Nyack School Asst. Superintendent to Step Down

An assistant Nyack School District superintendent, whose boss is herself under fire from district unions, is leaving this summer. That’s according to News 12. Dr. Grace Chan, the assistant superintendent for finance and operations, will reportedly leave as of July 1st for a similar job in the Putnam Valley School District. Several unions and parents have expressed opposition to Superintendent Dr. Susan Yom, and called for her to resign.

Congestion Pricing Final Vote to Come Wednesday

A final vote on the controversial New York City congestion pricing plan is expected Wednesday. NBC New York reports government vehicles will likely be exempted from the tolls, as will most commuter buses and yellow school buses in the city’s Public Schools, charter and Catholic schools, as well as private schools if they have a contract with the Department of Education. If approved, the plan could start in June. Cars will be charged $15 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street, while trucks could be charged up to $36, depending on size.

Measles on the Rise Again, Rockland County Executive Encourages People to Get Immunized

Cases of the measles are on the rise in the U-S and around the world in spots, with one now confirmed on Long Island, the third in New York and the first outside the city. As such, local officials are encouraging people to get vaccinated to prevent spread. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says children should be getting vaccinated when they turn a year old to prevent the highly contagious disease…

The CDC said Friday there’s 62 cases in the U.S. as of Thursday. They advise children and international travelers to get vaccinated. Measles is an airborne virus that mostly affects children under the age of five. The World Health Organization says it can be prevented in two vaccine doses.
