The New York State Senate and Assembly have each come up with their own budget proposals in response to the Governor’s spending plan. There are similarities and differences among the three. A Republican Rockland state lawmaker has joined with three other GOP colleagues in the Assembly and Senate to make the crime of “body dismemberment and concealment of a human corpse” a bail-eligible, class-E felony. It would also strengthen the use of electronic location monitoring. This in response to the horrific case out on Long Island in which body parts from two people were found in various locations. Four people have been charged in the case but were released because the charges are not currently bail-eligible. At a press conference in Albany yesterday, Rockland State Assemblyman John McGowan of the 97th district, covering Orangetown and portions of Ramapo, himself a former prosecutor, said New York hasn’t been safer with the new bail reform rules currently in place…
At a press conference last week to announce new security measures for the city’s subway system, Governor Kathy Hochul said judges already have new discretionary powers, established by last year’s budget, and they can, and should, be using them in extreme cases…
The remains of a 53-year-old man and 59-year-old woman from Yonkers were scattered in Suffolk County. Three of the four suspects – 44 year-old Steven Brown, 38 year-old Jeffrey Mackey, 40 year-old Amanda Wallace – are all from Amityville. The fourth suspect, 33 year-old Alexis Nieves, is reportedly homeless. They’ve been charged with first-degree hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence, and concealment of a human corpse.

Clarkstown is hosting a public hearing at tonight’s town board meeting regarding a proposal to put a group home in West Nyack near the Orangetown border. The proposal would let the home at 259 Sickletown Road be used to temporarily house up to 14 people and support staff for those with eating disorders. Clarkstown supervisor George Hoehmann says the site selection process for group homes is governed by state law…
The public hearing is being held at tonight’s town board meeting at Clarkstown Town hall at 7pm.

Scattered power outages continued into the night and early this morning following yesterday’s day-long winds that blasted around the county and the surrounding areas. Orange and Rockland Utilities said there were as many as 18,000 that had lost their power before 10pm last night in Rockland, Orange and Sullivan Counties in New York and Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey. 2,900 remained without power as of late last night. If you see any downed wires do not touch or approach them, it’s best to assume they are energized and dangerous. Instead, call O&R immediately at 1-877-434-4100.
Ramapo Development Could Move Forward
The Ramapo Town Board could vote tomorrow on a 637-home development and retail space and parks at the old Minisceongo Golf Course. That’s according to the Journal News. The Miller’s Pond developers need a higher-density zone for the project. Plans for the development include 535 townhouses and 102 apartments. The community would also include parks, several miles of trails, and 56 acres of open space.
Hoax 911 Call Hits Orange County School
Two 14 year-olds have been charged in connection with a hoax 911 call to an area school that falsely reported an active shooter. That’s according to DailyVoice.com. The incident reportedly occurred in the Orange County town of Wallkill last Friday at Monhagen Middle School. Two unidentified students from Middletown were arrested and charged with Falsely Reporting an Incident. They were released and are due back in court next week.

Now that the government has passed yet another temporary spending bill to keep the government open, they’re turning their attention to potentially banning the social media platform, TikTok. The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted unanimously last week to pass the bill that would force TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest itself of the company. Connor Mahoney of Mahoney Asset Management in Chestnut Ridge says if it starts with TikTok, the move to ban could spread to other apps…

The bill would give the president power to identify social media apps as national security threats if they are believed to be under the control of foreign adversaries. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act” could come to the House floor for a vote this week.
