A deal was reached over the weekend that put an end to New York’s three-week prison strike by corrections officers, but not before 2,000 still-striking officers were fired. Published reports said the employees were to return to work yesterday and while many did, others did not. Part of the most recent agreement includes pausing parts of the HALT Act for 90 days. Meanwhile, the state is investigating two high-profile deaths of inmates recently, one that happened late last month in upstate New York. The New York Times reported 22 year-old Messiah Nantwi was beaten unconscious by multiple correction officers at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy shortly before he died. Six guards have been charged with murder in the death last December of 43 year-old Robert Brooks, an inmate at Marcy Prison across the street from Mid-State. The incident was caught on body-worn cameras.
