Rockland’s top Republican is calling on his party’s candidates for president and vice-president to apologize for the comments and unfounded “eating cast-and-dogs” rumors they have been spreading about the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio. The accusations have been echoing loudly in the Spring Valley community where there is a large Haitian population. Florence Pierre-Pierre is the President of the Hudson Valley Haitian American Nurses Association, and at a press conference last week she said that the comments have put the lives of an entire innocent population in danger…  

Meanwhile, in Springfield itself, The Guardian reports business has been brisk at a local Creole restaurant, and residents have been showing increased support for the Haitian community with increased volunteerism and donations for local organizations.

A supermarket scheduled to close in the Town of Haverstraw has a final closing date. Over the summer, Stop & Shop’s parent company announced they’d be closing several under-performing stores in the chain, among them the Samsondale Plaza location in the village of West Haverstraw. A sign posted in the store said they’d be shutting Thursday, October 31st at 3pm. Haverstraw supervisor Howard Phillips is hopeful something will replace it soon…

Stop & Shop’s parent company announced in July the West Haverstraw location was among 32 supermarkets in the Northeast to be shutting down. The company operates other locations in New City, Nanuet, and Orangeburg. Those will remain open.

The AI revolution will require enormous amounts of computing power, and they may need nuclear to step in and fill the gaps that other power alternatives are ready to handle yet. NPR reported Friday that Three Mile Island, the power plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania, primarily known as the scene of the worst commercial nuclear accident in American history, will reopen to power Microsoft’s data centers. Constellation Energy made that announcement Friday. Locally, Holtec International and area officials have been trying to come up with ways to safely clean up the Indian Point site that’s been closed for years. On Saturday’s “Tough Times with Lou Young” program, Holtec’s Director of Government Affairs and Communications Pat O’Brien said it’s not likely the site will power up again, but, he added, it’s not out of the question…

The House failed Wednesday to pass a six-month GOP government funding plan that included a controversial measure targeting non-citizen voting. The defeat of the bill increases the chances of a government shutdown beginning at the end of September. Reuters reported Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer, said yesterday they’re preparing a stopgap spending bill that would avert a partial government shutdown. House Republicans have not yet said what their next move would be. In other Congressional news, a bill that would require auto manufacturers to continue offering AM radios in their cars was overwhelmingly passed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee Wednesday. The bill, “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act” next heads to the full House for a vote.
