The county’s latest COVID-19 update shows the death count has spiked yet again, but the number of hospitalizations and total cases continue their downward trend. Monday’s update from the health department shows eight more fatalities due to COVID, for a total of 1,090. The number of active COVID cases is down about 3,600 to 9,071, and the number of residents hospitalized with confirmed cases of coronavirus is down one for a total of 99.
Sale of Suffern Quarry Finalized, Property put Back on Tax Rolls
The sale of the Suffern Quarry is finally done, and the town of Ramapo and the village of Suffern are hopeful for good things to come as a result. Ramapo originally bought the 60-acre former Tilcon Quarry site for one dollar 16 years ago after it closed. Ramapo supervisor Michael Specht says the $5 million dollar sale puts the town on strong financial ground…
The property is now back on the tax rolls for Ramapo residents and those in the Suffern Central School District.
Clarkstown Construction Company Owner Indicted by Rockland Grand Jury on Insurance Fraud Charges
A Clarkstown construction company owner has been indicted by a Rockland County Grand Jury on Grand Larceny and Insurance Fraud charges. District Attorney Tom Walsh says 51 year-old Anthony Frascone, owner of Alpha-Omega in Congers, is accused of giving false information to workers’ compensation insurance for his employees. Frascone’s attorney told The Journal News he denied all the charges, noting the case is “highly technical” and there was no criminal intent. He is due back in court February 1st.
Suffern Man Faces Federal Charges for Failing to Pay Payroll Taxes
A Suffern man was arrested Thursday on charges he failed to pay nearly $30 million dollars in payroll and unemployment taxes, and benefit plan fraud. In a statement, U.S. Attorney General Philip Sellinger said 62 year-old Joseph Schwartz faces prison time and fines stemming from the 18 counts filed against him. Sellinger said Schwartz, the principal owner of Skyline Management Group in New Jersey, neglected to pay various taxes for employees at 95 health care and rehab facilities he ran in eleven different states.
Area Group Hosting Virtual Educational Forum on Human Trafficking Tonight
January is “human trafficking awareness month” and an area group is looking to educate teens, parents and educators on how to recognize and prevent child trafficking in their communities. Natalie Maniscalco is the co-founder of the non-profit group “Wonder Girls” and they’re holding a free educational Zoom meeting tonight that she says can help keep trafficking from happening both online and in everyday situations…
