Downtown Suffern was re-opened Wednesday afternoon after an early-morning fire yesterday shut the area by Lafayette Avenue and Suffern Place. A fire ripped through the building at 83 Lafayette Avenue, next door to the movie theater. The Journal-News reported the fire started on the first floor in Rockland Halal Meat, located at the western corner of the building. The cause is under investigation. There were no injuries reported.

The county’s COVID-19 death count is on the rise again. Yesterday’s updated count from the health department shows an increase of 11 since Monday’s update, for a total of 1,050. The number of active COVID cases is up more than 600 to 19,226, but the number of residents hospitalized with confirmed cases of coronavirus is down 20 at 150.

The New York State Gaming Commission earlier this month announced four operators have been approved for mobile sports betting, bringing the convenience of sports betting to your cell phone here in the Empire State. A caller to “The Morning Show” on Tuesday, Michelle, questioned how the state benefits from online gambling…
Rockland Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski says neighboring states have had similar capabilities already, and though he has reservations considering the addictive nature of gambling, he says area school districts will reap the rewards…
The first four operators to be given a license in New York State are Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Rush Street Interactive.

The New York/New Jersey Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County, and political officials and others on Monday marked the second anniversary of the 2019 Hanukkah stabbing attack in Monsey. 72 year-old Rabbi Josef Neuman died of his wounds three months after the December 28th incident, in which several others were also injured…
And that was U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Rockland Congressman Mondaire Jones, and State Attorney General Letitia James. 37 year-old Grafton Thomas was captured shortly after the attack, and investigators reportedly found his hand-written journals expressing antisemitic views. Thomas faces charges in state and federal court, but a federal judge has ruled him incompetent to stand trial on the federal charges and has since been hospitalized.
