An Orangeburg woman is recovering after she was struck by a car that jumped the curb at the Pearl River Shop Rite, striking her and the building earlier this week. Orangetown Police say Monday afternoon’s incident occurred around 2:30, when a 77 year-old New City man lost control of his Jeep Cherokee, striking the 74 year-old woman and the front of the store. The woman was taken to Montefiore Nyack Hospital, treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and released. NY Governor Signs SLEEP Act to Help Cut Back on Loud Illegal Car and Motorcycle Muffler Modifications
Everyone loves those loud, obnoxious motorcycle and car mufflers that were illegally modified to sound like that, right? Wrong! Of course, they don’t! And neither does the state legislature, or the governor. On Friday, Kathy Hochul signed a bill that raises the penalties against motorists and repair shops that illegally modify mufflers and exhaust systems to be so loud that they wake you out of a sound sleep from a mile away…
New York City Councilman Justin Brannan supported the bill, which was sponsored by a Brooklyn state senator, and says sometimes the cars are so loud, it’s scary…
The “Stop Loud and Excessive Exhaust Pollution” or SLEEP Act, raises the maximum fine for installing illegal equipment from $150 to $1,000. Inspection stations will also be required to make sure motorcycle mufflers and exhaust systems have not been illegally modified. Repair shops caught installing illegal exhausts three times in 18 months could lose their certificate of inspection.

ELECTION 2021 RESULTS: Rockland County Executive Re-elected by Wide Margin
Rockland’s County Executive Republican Ed Day cruised into a third term last night, and with over 73% of the vote, defeated Democrat L’Tanya Watkins, a defense attorney who was making her first run for office. It was close, but in Stony Point, residents turned down a developer’s plan to take over the golf course and Letchworth Village property, we’ll have more on that coming up.
In other election returns, Clarkstown Supervisor Republican George Hoehmann easily defeated Democrat Jeffrey Greenberg. In the Town Board race, Ward 1’s incumbent Republican Frank Borelli beat Democrat Adam Kaufman, Ward 2’s incumbent Republican Michael Graziano beat Democrat Shari Lin Fischberg, Ward 3 incumbent Republican Donald Franchino beat Democrat Sam Salgado-Hernandez, and Ward 4 Democrat Patrick Carroll ran unopposed. In Clarkstown’s Justice race, Scott Ugell and Leslie Kahn were the winners. Democrat Justin Sweet had a comfortable lead for Town Clerk.
In Stony Point, Republican incumbent Jim Monaghan easily won his fourth two-year term, defeating local attorney, Democrat Michael Diederich. Republicans Keith Williams and Todd Rose defeated Mari Morrison Rodriguez and Lauren Schimko for board seats.
First-term Orangetown supervisor Republican Teresa Kenny ran unopposed and won her second term. Kenny said there’s much to be accomplished in the next two years, things that COVID brought to a halt…
There were two spots up on the Orangetown town board, with Republicans Thomas Diviny and Brian Donohue grabbing those seats.
In the village of Suffern, incumbent Republican Mayor Edward Markunas appears to have lost to Democrat Michael Curley, 52-48 percent. Incumbent trustee Democrat Jo Meegan Corrigan appeared to hold on to her seat while Republican Frank Hagen won the second seat on the board.
Haverstraw supervisor Howard Phillips and Ramapo supervisor Michael Specht ran unopposed, as did Spring Valley mayor Alan Simon, Nyack mayor Don Hammond, Piermont mayor Bruce Tucker and South Nyack mayor Bonnie Christian.
In other area races of interest, Democrat Eric Adams will be the next mayor of New York City, after he defeated Republican Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. In New Jersey the governor’s race between incumbent Democrat Phil Murphy and Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli was too close to call. Westchester County Executive George Latimer was reelected.
There were five state ballot propositions this year, with voters approving Prop Two, which adds a right to clean water, clean air, and a healthful environment to the state constitution’s Bill of Rights. Voters also said yes to Prop Five, which will expand New York City’s Civil Court jurisdiction. The three propositions that dealt with voting issues, props 1, 3 and 4, were too close to call, but “No” was leading on all three.
Lohud.com reported turnout was low, at just less than 25%.
Stony Pointers Reject Sale of Golf Course and Letchworth Village to Local Developer
In perhaps the most closely-watched race of the night, Stony Pointers narrowly rejected the sale of the town-owned Patriot Hills Golf Course and 26 acres of the Letchworth property. A local developer was looking to bring in a convention center, maintain the golf course and remediate the buildings currently located there. George Potanovic is the President of SPACE, the Stony Point Action Committee for the Environment, and said his group was concerned there’d be too many other possibilities for which the land could be used…
The vote against the sale was 2,088 to 1,904 for it, a difference of just 184 votes. All of the results are unofficial.
