Rockland’s Major Roadways, including PIP, Rapidly Flooding
Statement from Rockland County Executive Ed Day:
According to reports from our Office of Fire and Emergency Services conditions within Rockland are rapidly deteriorating with flooding on major roadways including the Palisades Interstate Parkway and many other locations around the County. I ask all of our residents to stay off the roads for the remainder of the evening and overnight until the conditions we are seeing improve.
We have requested that the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services relocate their prepositioned water rescue assets to the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona which they have agreed to do in case they are needed locally.
This storm is dangerous and the risk to your life if you attempt to travel right now is severe. Please stay off the road, stay safe and allow our first responders to do their jobs.
NY Takes Steps to Stem COVID Spread
New York’s governor is looking to tackle COVID head-on to keep the numbers from getting any worse here in the state. Governor Kathy Hochul yesterday announced a plan to test school staffers who are not vaccinated on a weekly basis. Hochul also wants to decentralize booster shot distribution and put it in the hands of local health departments…
Hochul said there won’t be a need for any shutdowns as long as people stay vigilant – by getting the vaccine, wearing masks, washing their hands, doing the things that have been working.
NY Looks to Improve Emergency Rental Assistance Program
Low- and middle-income renters or landlords who rent to them may have an easier time getting money from a federal program that thus far has been poorly administered by the state. Rockland’s state senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick says renters encompass 30 percent of the county’s residents, and should apply to the Emergency Rental Assistance Program as soon as possible…
Meanwhile the federal moratorium on evictions expired yesterday. Governor Hochul yesterday called legislators back to Albany for a rare special session to extend the moratorium for New York tenants and landlords who have struggled during the pandemic…
We have a link to the Emergency Rental Assistance Program here. The special session is also expected to tackle the state’s stalled roll-out of the marijuana program.
School Starts for Two Rockland Districts
Today’s the first day of school for the Pearl River and Clarkstown Central School Districts. Some Clarkstown residents had protested their decision for a full masking policy, but it’s moot since the state has come through with a mask policy of its own anyway. In a promotional video posted on their website, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Martin Cox said everyone needs to work together for the school year to be successful…
Board of Education President Walter Litvak said healthy and safety for everyone includes mental health…
All students, staff and visitors, not just to Clarkstown School but all public and private schools in New York, whether vaccinated or not, must wear masks indoors as mandated by the State Department of Health.
