Fundraiser to Support Girls’ Health and Skills Education Being Held Sunday in Orangeburg

A non-profit, after-school program for teenage girls is hosting a wellness day fundraiser in Orangeburg this weekend that stresses the importance of self-care, healthy eating and daily exercise. Natalie Maniscalco is one of the co-founders of “Wonder Girls,” a component fund of the Rockland Community Foundation. Maniscalco says social media and the pandemic have affected teenage girls’ self-esteem, and Sunday’s Wellness Day fundraiser can help girls regain their confidence, leadership, community and business skills…

The Wonder Girls Wellness Day is being held Sunday from 10:00AM to 1:00PM at Varsity House on Blaisdell Road in Orangeburg. This event is $10 for students and $25 for adults. For more information click here.

New City Man Charged with Assault After Young Son Struck by Car

A New City man has been hit with assault and other charges after his young son was struck by a car. Detective Norman Peters of the Clarkstown Police Department says a four year-old boy was hit by a car Monday afternoon after running into the street…

Peters said the boy was conscious, alert, and responding to officers at the scene. 50 year-old Michael Budnick was charged with assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, and harassment. He was released on an appearance ticket and is due back in Clarkstown Justice Court October 6th.

Piermont Officials Launch GoFundMe to Honor Rockland’s First Line-of-Duty First Firefighter Death

It’s an honor that’s long overdue, but the man Piermont officials believe to have been the first line-of-duty death of a Rockland firefighter was honored yesterday, and a fundraiser was opened to help build a memorial in his honor. In 1854, 28 year-old Thomas Pomplin, known as “Pomp,” was one of the first black firefighters in Rockland, in Empire Hose Company #1 in Piermont. They were called to Nyack to help put out a massive factory fire. State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick says he and Rockland Assemblyman Mike Lawler are doing what they can to help the Piermont community give Pomplin a well-deserved hero’s recognition…

Pomplin died a few days later from heat exhaustion and other injuries. The Village of Piermont and the Piermont Fire Department are hoping to raise $10,000 through GoFundMe to build a memorial in Piermont’s Flywheel Park to honor him.

Report: Village of Haverstraw Deputy Mayor Resigns

Haverstraw’s deputy mayor has resigned from the Board of Trustees, citing personal reasons. That’s according to the Journal News. Emily Dominguez was first elected to the village board in 2007, and she was made deputy mayor five years ago.
