Reports: NY Gov to Resign in 14 Days
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo today he will resign in 14 days. That’s according to the NY Times. This comes in the wake of the state’s attorney general reported that he’s sexually harassed multiple women. The report and the allegations sparked calls from all over the political spectrum for him to step down.
“And I think that given the circumstances the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to government, and therefore that is what I’ll do, because I work for you, and doing the right thing, is doing the right thing for you,” Cuomo said, according to NBC News.
Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, will become the state’s first female governor.
“It is a matter of life and death. Government operations and wasting energy on distraction is the last thing government should be,” Cuomo added. “I cannot be the cause. New York tough means New York loving. And I love New York and I love you. Everything I have ever done has been motivated by that love and I would never want to be unhelpful in any way.”
COVID Numbers Jump in Rockland, One of Several NY Counties Suggested by CDC to Require Indoor Mask-Wearing by Everyone
The number of hospitalized with COVID or suspected COVID cases nearly doubled in Rockland since Friday’s numbers were released. As of this morning, 20 were hospitalized, up from the 11 reported yesterday. Ramapo supervisor Michael Specht says we have got to do a better job at getting the unvaccinated to get their shots…
On July first, Rockland had 66 active COVID cases. Yesterday there were 461 reported cases, almost 7-times more. Rockland is also among 18 counties in the state identified by the CDC as having the highest level of COVID community spread. As such, they recommend indoor mask-wearing for all people, including those who are vaccinated. Much of the Hudson Valley is on that list, including Westchester, Orange, Sullivan and Dutchess counties.
The Rockland County Department of Health is hosting a first-dose COVID vaccination clinic tomorrow at Building A in Pomona at 50 Sanatorium Road from 3-7pm. Walk-ins are welcome, or you can register online. To do that, and for more vaccine clinic dates, click here.
Meanwhile, area school districts are grappling with what to do for the upcoming school year which is just weeks away. News 12 reports Nyack and Clarkstown school districts are going to require universal masking. Other districts including Pearl River and North Rockland are still taking a wait-and-see approach.
Impeachment Process of NY Gov Could Take Weeks Instead of Months
While many across the state are urging the governor to step down in the wake of the Attorney General’s investigative report earlier this month, it looks like the governor is digging in for a long battle. In a press conference yesterday following a meeting of the Assembly’s Judiciary Committee, which is spearheading the Assembly’s investigation, New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said what once might have taken months may now take a few weeks…
But even that may not be fast enough for many who want to see the governor booted from office now. Judiciary Committee chairman, Assemblyman Charles Lavine of Long Island said they’re in no hurry, but are working as fast as possible…
The committee will get two more updates in private, executive sessions next Monday and a week later. There will then be a series of public hearings involving workplace harassment experts and discussion of the state’s impeachment procedures. The judiciary committee is then expected to make a recommendation to the full Assembly on how to proceed to an impeachment vote, if necessary.
