The commission features Democrats and Republicans appointed by leaders in the state Legislature. Once the summer’s public hearings conclude the commission will submit new proposed maps by January first, and then the Legislature can either accept their recommendations, re-draw them differently, or leave them as-is. The data is based on the 2020 census, in which New York state lost one congressional seat. That will take effect in 2022. The last re-districting took place in 2014.
