If swimming at Lake Welch in Harriman State Park was in your weekend plans you’re going to have to reconsider. The New York State Parks Department says Lake Welch beach in Stony Point is closed due to a harmful algal bloom. It’ll remain closed until the water quality improves. The Lake Welch boat launch is also closed for boating and kayaking today because of the algaecide treatment taking place.

13 Year-old Boy Rushed to Hospital After Struck by Dump Truck in New City
A 13 year-old boy is being treated for injuries at Westchester Medical Center after being hit by a dump truck while riding his bike in New City yesterday. News Briefs: Tomkins Cove Man Charged After Police Chase from Sloatsburg to Mahwah
A Tomkins Cove man reportedly faces several charges after leading police on a pursuit that crossed state lines into Mahwah, New Jersey, Tuesday evening. That’s according to DailyVoice.com. They report 50 year-old Eugene McDermott fled the scene of an accident in Sloatsburg. He reportedly hit several cars along the way including a Suffern Police car with his Dodge pickup truck. A pedestrian nearby was reportedly struck by debris from that crash. McDermott was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center and charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer, heroin possession and other charges. He was then transferred to the Bergen County Jail where he was being held pending extradition to Rockland to face charges here as well. Three Mahwah Police officers suffered minor injuries during the incident.
18 Year-old Stony Point Woman Killed After Motorcycle Accident in NJ
An 18-year-old Stony Point woman died and an 18-year-old Haverstraw man was hospitalized after their motorcycle collided with a Jeep in Englewood, New Jersey, Tuesday evening. DailyVoice.com reported they were traveling eastbound on East Palisade Avenue when they were struck by a Jeep Cherokee that was making a left turn onto Dana Place. Both teens were ejected from the motorcycle and rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center. The woman died, and the male, the driver of the motorcycle, was listed in stable condition with serious injuries. The Jeep driver, a 52-year-old Englewood woman, was not injured. No other details were available.
NY Governor Attends Official Opening of Veterans Housing Project in Tappan
New York’s Governor came to Rockland yesterday to help officially open the $6 million “Homes for Heroes Veterans Apartments” complex in Tappan. The newly-constructed 14-unit supportive housing development for veterans is located on the grounds of the former Camp Shanks off Western Highway. At a press conference yesterday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said for those who are willing to shed blood on battlefields across the world, a home is the least our nation can do for them…
The project was spearheaded by former Orangetown legislator and Marine Veteran, John Murphy. The homes were financed by $1.5 million in private donations and $4.5 million from the state.
