Excessive Heat Pounds Rockland Again
Another day with more extreme heat, the feel-like temps approach near-100 degrees again today. Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco says it’s important to stay hydrated, and be aware of people or animals in hot cars…
Today is the first day of summer, officially it gets here at 4:15 this afternoon. There is a chance of rain Friday through Monday, and that could cool the temperatures a little bit. The heat prompted New York Governor Kathy Hochul to offer free admission to all New York State Parks for today. That includes Rockland Lake State Park in Congers, Tallman Mountain State Park in Sparkill, Bear Mountain State Park, and Lake Tiorati Beach in Harriman State Park.
Cidery in Orangetown Withdraws Zone Change Request
A cidery appears to be scaling back on its plans to operate full-time in the town of Orangetown. Rockland Cider Works on Sickletown Road in Orangeburg has been at the center of controversy, particularly not well-liked by private homeowners who live near the farm site who haven’t been fond of the loud gatherings and excessive traffic in their neighborhood. Orangetown Supervisor Teresa Kenny says the Van Houten Farm Market Benefit Trust has withdrawn their request for the zone change that would allow them to operate the cidery, but there are other, perhaps more acceptable options…
Kenny says they could also sell their cider at retail. Van Houten Farms has argued that they need to evolve and grow if they are going to survive.
Haverstraw Supervisor Supports Governor’s Call for Mask Ban on NYC Subways
New York’s governor is considering a partial ban on people wearing masks in the City’s subway system. In a press conference last week, governor Kathy Hochul said she’s spoken with Mayor Eric Adams and state lawmakers about how that could happen but still leave room for health and religious exemptions. Hochul said the mask ban idea was prompted by a recent series of hate crimes that targeted Jewish New Yorkers…
Hochul said several members of the Board of the Brooklyn Museum had their homes vandalized. Haverstraw supervisor Howard Phillips agrees with the mask-ban concept…
Hochul said the mask restrictions would help prevent crime on public transit systems. She did, however, say any restrictions would have to consider things like Halloween and other cultural celebrations that involve face coverings.
