New York lawmakers are mulling a plan backed by a local state senator to switch local elections, excluding New York City, to even-numbered years. But the New York Post reports Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has pulled the bill from consideration for now, though it could come up in the next session. North Rockland and Orange County state senator James Skoufis says the move would boost voter turnout since the elections would coincide with presidential and congressional election years. Rockland County Executive Ed Day on Friday’s Morning Show said the system wasn’t broken and didn’t need to be fixed…
Day is also skeptical since he said the bill came up in the waning days of the legislative session right before the holiday. New York’s GOP Chairman, Nick Langworthy, opposes the plan and in a statement called the move a manipulation of the system. In a Tweet, Skoufis said Langworthy’s comments were “rumor-driven hysteria.”
