Brinks Heist getaway driver, former Weather Underground member, David Gilbert, less than a week after the 40th anniversary of the robbery at the old Nanuet Mall, just a little more than half-way through his 75 years-to-life sentence, has been granted parole. Gilbert had been granted clemency by disgraced New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in August before he resigned. South Nyack Police Chief Daniel Wilson, who also is president of the Police Chiefs Association of Rockland County, called the move “disgraceful.”
Rockland County Executive Ed Day called the ruling “a cruel and unjust slap in the face to the families of Sergeant Edward O’Grady, Officer Waverly ‘Chipper’ Brown and Brinks guard Peter Paige as well as the people of Rockland County.”…
Rockland Assemblyman Mike Lawler called on the entire Parole Board to immediately resign…
The now 76 year-old Gilbert got support from various groups, including “The Release Aging People in Prison Campaign.” They applauded the parole board’s decision, saying Gilbert will undoubtedly be an asset to his community and poses no risk to public safety. He’s not a free man just yet, but he is expected to be released sometime before November 30th.
