A Spring Valley man faces increased charges now that a hit-and-run victim has died of his injuries. 29 year-old Christain Lemus-Vasquez faces “leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death,” that’s a felony. Clarkstown Police say it began on Friday morning when several pedestrians were struck by a vehicle near 17 South Second Avenue in Nanuet. Clarkstown Police Detective Norman Peters says they found two victims, who had been working on a garbage truck…

They two were taken to area hospitals. Clarkstown Detectives tracked down Lemus-Vasquez, who was arrested and initially charged with “leaving the scene of a serious physical injury accident.” He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance. One of the victims, a former Spring Valley High School football standout, then died Sunday of his injuries and the charges were upgraded. Lemus-Vasquez voluntarily came to Clarkstown Police headquarters yesterday for arraignment. He was released on $5,000 bail and is due to return to court on a future date.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been set up for the victim, Estibe Bustos Ceballos, a native of Ecuador and married father of two young children who graduated Spring Valley High School four years ago. The GoFundMe was set up by Spring Valley Football Coach Andrew Delva.

Area state lawmakers in both parties are pleased the “Accessory Dwelling Unit” proposal has been removed from the governor’s budget proposal, but warn the legislation could come up again and they’re prepared to defeat it again and again. ADUs would give permission to single-family homeowners to subdivide their homes and create apartments regardless of the local laws and whether their infrastructure can withstand it. Rockland assemblyman Mike Lawler, a Republican, though the bill’s been taken out of the budget, it could come up in the future…

Rockland assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, a Democrat, says zoning issues are a core function of local governments, not a one-size-fits-all approach that comes down state-wide, and he’s glad the governor backed down…

The budget process is underway in Albany, with passage expected by April first.

Rockland’s deputy county executive is calling it a career. Guillermo Rosa retired from the Army as Lieutenant Colonel to be Rockland County Executive Ed Day’s Chief of Staff when he was first elected in 2013. Rosa has been involved ever since, and last month spoke at Day’s swearing in ceremony…

Day said Rosa won’t be leaving the area, choosing instead to stay in Haverstraw. No word yet on a replacement.

The new Rockland Office of Building and Codes shut down their first offender in Spring Valley late last week, one that was on their top 100 list of places to get to first. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says nine families, including five children, were living in extremely hazardous conditions at a home on 3 George Street…

The “accessory dwelling units” proposal has been dropped from the budget, that’s according to Newsday late last night. Governor Kathy Hochul reportedly pulled the proposal that would have required local governments to accept various versions of multi-family housing in single-family homes. Rockland Assemblyman Mike Lawler was pleased with the announcement, telling “The Morning Show” last week that a bi-partisan effort had been working to help kill the plan…

Meanwhile, earlier yesterday, the governor accepted the nomination of the New York Democratic party to run for her first full term as governor…

Hochul got 85 percent of the vote. This marks the first time a woman got the nod from a major party to run for governor of New York. She could still face a primary challenge by New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Long Island Congressman Tom Souzzi.
