Downtown Suffern was re-opened Wednesday afternoon after an early-morning fire yesterday shut the area by Lafayette Avenue and Suffern Place. A fire ripped through the building at 83 Lafayette Avenue, next door to the movie theater. The Journal-News reported the fire started on the first floor in Rockland Halal Meat, located at the western corner of the building. The cause is under investigation. There were no injuries reported.

In her daily COVID press conference yesterday, New York governor Kathy Hochul said hospital capacity is a concern upstate where vaccination rates aren’t what they should be, particularly in the Finger Lakes, Central New York, and Mohawk Valley regions of the state, while that’s not yet an issue downstate, where the hospitals are helping with upstate overflow…
For additional COVID-19 protection, Dr. Ruppert encourages those who have been vaccinated already to get their booster shot as soon as you are eligible. For unvaccinated children 5 and older, she says get fully vaccinated now.
Clarkstown Detective Bureau Investigating New City Fire; No Injuries Reported
No one was injured following a blaze yesterday afternoon at a home in Clarkstown. Police say the fire struck around 1:05 at 31 Thornwood Drive in New City. Clarkstown Police Detective Norman Peters says the residents were able to get out safely…
Fire companies from New City, Congers, West Nyack and Central Nyack all worked to put the fire out. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Clarkstown Detective Bureau.
Plans for New Hi-Tor Shelter Continue Despite Arrest of President Last Week

Debbie Dibernardo was indicted Thursday by a Rockland Grand Jury for filing false documents on 17 animals in the shelter’s care, 16 misdemeanors and one felony charge…
Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh said the incidents took place during the summer of 2020. Dibernardo was arraigned in Rockland County Court and released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to return to court on January 18th. We reached out to DiBernardo but we did not hear back. The county has committed more than $8 million in funding, on top of the various grants and donations the shelter has been given over the years. The Hi-Tor Animal Shelter has been in operation since 1973 and annually takes in 2,000 animals, primarily cats and dogs.
Hi-Tor President Charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing and Falsifying Business Records
Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh announced this afternoon that Debbie Dibernardo, President of Hi-Tor Animal Care Center Inc, has been indicted by a Rockland County Grand Jury for Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the 1st Degree and Falsifying Business Records in the 2nd Degree (17 Counts).
