NY Governor’s Mask Mandate Polarizes Officials, WRCR Callers; Westchester CE Tests Positive for COVID
While many local officials are pushing back on the governor’s new mask mandate that went into effect yesterday, callers to “The Morning Show” were ok with it and mask-wearing in general. This as the numbers of deaths and those hospitalized with COVID have risen again since Friday. Rockland County Executive Ed Day said the governor’s new mandate is unenforceable, unnecessary, and would force the county to have to re-direct health department resources, but callers weren’t sure that’s the right message to send…
While the County Executive did not say you don’t have to wear masks, he did say the county would not enforce the new mandate as it currently stands, due to a lack of information provided by the governor’s office, and enforcement would compromise the larger vaccination effort. The numbers, unfortunately, continue to move upwards. We’ve recorded another death since Friday, we’re now at 1,005, and the number of hospitalized with COVID-19 has gone from 23 on Friday to 36 as of yesterday afternoon.
Over in Westchester, County Executive George Latimer said they’ll do their best to enforce the mask provision, calling it the best move to protect the health of New Yorkers and the state’s economy. Meanwhile, Latimer yesterday said he tested positive for COVID. He is quarantined and working from home. He told the Westchester Business Journal he had heard some people who attended an event in Larchmont that he was at tested positive so he got himself tested. Latimer said he had gotten vaccinated but had yet to get a booster.
Local Officials Slam Governor’s Indoor Mask Mandate
Local elected officials are slamming the governor’s new indoor mask decree, this as COVID numbers continue to slowly move upwards. The number of deaths in the county, with two more reported Friday, now totals 1,004. We’ve got 1,306 active cases, over 300 more since last week, and 23 hospitalized and confirmed with coronavirus, up from 20 last Monday. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says the governor’s new mandate is unenforceable, and unnecessary…
Governor Kathy Hochul told attendees at Mount Neboh Baptist Church in the city yesterday that they and New Yorkers need to work together to get through the pandemic…
As far as the mask mandate, the governor says starting today masks have to be worn in all indoor public places unless businesses or venues have a vaccine requirement. These requirements are for both patrons and staff. It’ll be effective until January 15th, at which time the state will re-evaluate the plan based on current conditions. Noting that in Rockland more than 82% of the 18-and-older-population and 99% of seniors have been vaccinated, Assemblyman Mike Lawler called Governor Hochul’s mask mandate “government overreach at its worst.”
The Rockland Health Department is holding a COVID clinic today for first, second, immunocompromised and Pfizer boosters at the Martin Luther King Center in Spring Valley from 3-7pm. Walk-ins are available.
New City Teen Faces up to Four Years Behind Bars After Pleading Guilty to Fatal Drunk Driving Crash
A New City teen will spend up to four years in state prison after pleading guilty yesterday to driving while intoxicated, killing 16 year-old Clarkstown North High School student, Vlad Hvalyk, and injuring a 17 year-old girl, both passengers in his car. Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh says 18 year-old Alan Mendoza pleaded guilty yesterday to aggravated vehicular homicide. The incident occurred on May 6th. Walsh says Mendoza struck two other vehicles after crossing over a double-yellow line, and then struck a tree on Congers Road. Mendoza is expected to get 1 and 1/3 to four years in state prison when he is sentenced next May.
“For Sale” Sign Removed from Stony Point Boy Scout Campground
It looks like the town of Stony Point won’t have to worry about a local Boy Scout Camp being put up for sale. The Rockland County Executive’s office says the Boy Scouts of America’s Greater Hudson Valley Council Board has decided not to sell Camp Bullowa, meaning the scouting program can continue there. Town Supervisor Jim Monaghan recently said it looked like there wasn’t much interest in the property outside a local group…
Two other camps in the Hudson Valley were being considered as part of a package with Bullowa. Dutchess County’s Camp Nooteming in Salt Point will still be sold, while the Durland Scout Reservation Campground in Putnam Valley will not. The Boy Scouts of America organization is looking to unload various properties around the country to help pay nearly $2 billion in legal settlements with the Victims Compensation Trust stemming from thousands of lawsuits as part of a bankruptcy deal.
