About five or six inches of snow fell during the day Thursday, and that’s given way to a thin coating of ice overnight. Roads were passable but very treacherous in some areas. If you don’t have to be out on the roads you shouldn’t be. As of this morning there were no power outages to report in the O&R coverage area. The weather didn’t stop Rockland fire volunteers from putting out a blaze in Monsey. Motty’s Supermarket on Main Street was destroyed in the fast-moving blaze which began just after noon Thursday. No injuries were reported.

Another storm is heading our way. While the seemingly endless storm cycle this winter threatens some Rockland towns’ snow-removal budgets, Orangetown supervisor Teresa Kenny says her town is in good shape…

O&R emergency crews are standing by to repair damage and restore electric service from this storm, which is expected to leave as much as 10 inches of snow on the ground through Friday afternoon.

State Police are trying to figure out what happened after they found a car in flames with a person inside, dead, on the Palisades Parkway in Stony Point yesterday morning. Troopers found a dark-colored vehicle on the shoulder at exit 16 around two in the morning fully engulfed in flames, in a snowbank and facing west. The Stony Point Fire Department arrived on the scene and put the fire out, and it was then that Troopers saw the person inside the car. The investigation into the incident continues.

Today’s icy weather mix turned out to be mostly rain for the Rockland County area, but it’s still wreaking havoc with area snow removal budgets. Clarkstown supervisor George Hoehmann says the town highway department has had to go out several times to prep the roads…

O&R spokesman Mike Donovan says as much as a half-inch of ice could hit portions of their coverage area, and the company is ready to repair damage and restore electric service outages if necessary…

As of this morning there were 702 customers without power, and that was way out in Sullivan County.

A Wesley Hills man faces attempted murder and other charges after he allegedly attacked a correction officer at the Rockland County Jail. Sheriff Lou Falco says 31 year-old Israel Simon Gourion refused to re-enter his cell Wednesday night. Falco says he attacked and put the officer in a choke hold. Another inmate came to the officer’s aid, until additional correction officers were able to respond and get Gourion under control. Gourion is charged with first degree Attempted Murder, second degree Assault, and second degree Strangulation. He was arraigned before Clarkstown Town Justice Scott Ugell and sent back to the Correctional Facility on $250,000 bail. It’s not clear why Gurion was in jail in the first place.
