New York is launching a new contact tracing program to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The program would interview those infected by the virus and identify people they were in contact with to then keep the spread to a minimum. On top of that, Rockland Legislators are concerned the county isn’t getting its share of federal financial aid through the state. Minority Leader Lon Hofstein of Clarkstown says the money from the federal “Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security” Act, also known as the CARES Act, is based on population and not percentage of cases, and he wants the governor to fix that…

Erie and Monroe Counties, which include the large cities of Buffalo and Rochester respectively, will be included in the CARES Act funding, but they have a fraction of the cases and deaths Rockland has had. The total number of cases of coronavirus across the state is now around 257,000 and 15,300 deaths, with, here in Rockland, around 9,700 reported cases, based on state data, and 422 confirmed deaths.

Update: 4/19 10:24am: Clarkstown Police worked yesterday afternoon with the NYPD after a vehicle of interest in Friday’s shooting was observed by the NYPD in the Bronx. The car was stopped by the NYPD, but it is not yet determined whether the occupants of the vehicle had any involvement in the shooting in New City.

Update: 4/17 8:05pm: Police say the 29 year-old victim was shot once in the face and once in the back. He has been transported to Westchester Medical Center and his status is serious but stable. 

Earlier: At least one man was shot in an incident this afternoon in New City. Clarkstown Police say the shooting occurred around 1:10 this afternoon W. Burda Place in New City. Police say residents said they heard what sounded like a car accident followed by multiple gunshots. The unidentified victim drive himself to an area hospital where he is being treated. The other vehicle allegedly involved is described as a white sedan. No further description of the car or its occupants were available. If anyone was in the area or may have seen anything, contact the Clarkstown Police detective bureau at 845-639-5840.

The total number of cases of coronavirus across the state is now around 202,000 and close to 11,000 deaths, with nearly 3-thousand cases and 263 confirmed deaths here in Rockland. The state also agreed with area officials’ request to close Rockland Lake State Park, which closed this morning.

The governor issued an executive order Sunday directing employers to provide essential workers with a free cloth or surgical face mask when interacting with the public.

An Orange County man died yesterday afternoon after an incident on Route 59 in West Nyack by the West Nyack Fire Department substation near Palisades Center. Clarkstown Police say 57 year-old Richard Croll was unconscious in a dump truck that had live, downed power lines laying across it. The power was cut so police and EMS could attend to him.
