Hudson Valley lawmakers reacted to the announcement earlier today that President Joe Biden would be stepping aside in the race for president. In a statement, Rockland Congressman of the 17th District, Mike Lawler, said “Though President Biden and I have not seen eye-to-eye on a number of issues, I recognize his deep commitment to our country, and thank him for his years of service to the nation. I appreciate his resolve and his sacrifices.” Former Congressman Mondaire Jones, who is running for the seat he originally won the same year Biden became president, said he deserves “this much-needed rest, and know that your legacy is secure.” Orange County State Senator Democrat James Skoufis said it was the right move to get out of the race. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York praised Biden for “once again putting his country, his party, and our future first.” New York Senator, Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand thanked Biden for his decades of public service, and called it “an honor to serve alongside” him.

Lake Welch Reopens Following Algal Bloom Cleanup
Lake Welch Beach up in Harriman State Park in Stony Point was reponed yesterday after an intensive cleanup of an algal bloom shut it down last week. Laird was a guest on “Tough Times with Lou Young” right here on WRCR on Saturday. A massive bloom two years ago closed the lake all summer. Due to the heat wave, the swimming hours have been extended for today at Lake Tiorati and Lake Welch Beach, from 10AM to 6:45PM.

Rockland Lawmakers Condemn Assassination Attempt on Former President Trump
Rockland lawmakers were quick to condemn the shooting of former President Donald Trump on Saturday in Pennsylvania. County Executive Ed Day said, “we all need to take a step back, pray for the former President, and universally condemn vicious acts like this.” State Senator Bill Weber of the 38th district said, “political violence has no place in our democracy. Lawler also announced he and Congressman Ritchie Torres, a Bronx Democrat, would introduce legislation to provide enhanced Secret Service protection to former President Trump, President Biden, and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Junior. 17th District Congressional candidate, Mondaire Jones, thanked the first responders on the scene and he wished “former President Trump well as he recovers.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he was relieved former President Trump is safe and “political violence has no place in our country.” The GOP’s convention is set to begin today in Milwaukee, with Trump expected to accept the nomination on Thursday.
