Rockland’s former Congressman is officially running to get back the seat he lost last year. Spring Valley High School and Harvard Law graduate, Mondaire Jones, announced yesterday he is running for the Democratic nomination in New York’s 17th Congressional District next year. The seat is currently held by Republican Mike Lawler, who narrowly defeated former Representative, Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney, last year. In a statement, Lawler called Jones a radical progressive endorsed by AOC and “the Squad.” After the district’s lines were re-drawn, Jones tried his luck in a different district in 2022. Jones finished third in the Democratic primary for New York’s 10th District, which now covers portions of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Dozens have weighed-in since Friday’s document release on the Rockland County District Attorney’s Facebook page from the Spring Valley Adult home fire. All the comments expressed disappointment in the decision to offer the plea three weeks ago to the Rabbis charged with starting the fire or called for the D-A to resign. 72 year-old Nathaniel Sommer and 29 year-old Aaron Sommer were charged with causing the fatal Evergreen fire that killed volunteer firefighter, 35 year-old Jared Lloyd, and 70 year-old resident Oliver Hueston. Included in the paperwork released online include Investigation Reports from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the Department of Public Service, and court transcripts from the day the plea was accepted. Callers to “The Morning Show,” including Joe who said he is a member of Jared Lloyd’s firehouse, have also been outraged at the sentence, which they feel is little more than a slap on the wrist…

Others, like JP, were angered that included in the posting were graphic photos from the scene of the fire, which apparently were removed several hours after they were released…

The Sommers admitted to Judge Kevin Russo to using a blowtorch and coals to prepare the kitchen of the Evergreen Court Adult Home for Passover, causing the fatal blaze in March 2021. In the Facebook post, the D-A’s office said any public comments would be inappropriate as the case is not yet over. Rockland’s District Attorney finally has spoken out following the plea deal made nearly two weeks ago in the fatal Spring Valley Adult home fire that killed two people, including a village volunteer firefighter. Late Friday afternoon, just as the long holiday weekend was set to begin, D-A Tom Walsh’s office posted links to various documents related to the case, including Investigation Reports from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Department of Public Service, and the court transcript from the day the plea was accepted. In the post, the D-A’s office said any public comments would be inappropriate as the case is not yet over. The two defendants, 72 year-old Nathaniel Sommer and 29 year-old Aaron Sommer are scheduled to be sentenced September 20th. The majority of the callers to “The Morning Show” since the plea was made have been outraged at the light sentence the Sommers’ are being promised, five years’ probation for Nathaniel on two counts of second-degree manslaughter and three years for Aaron on second-degree reckless endangerment. Rabbi Nathaniel Sommer pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree manslaughter. He’s expected to be sentenced to five years’ probation. His son, Aaron, pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless endangerment, and he’ll get three years’ probation, and they’ll both pay $600 in court fees. They admitted to Judge Kevin Russo to using a blowtorch and coals to prepare the kitchen of the Evergreen Court Adult Home for Passover, causing the blaze that killed 35 year-old volunteer Spring Valley firefighter Jared Lloyd and resident Oliver Hueston. We’ve tried several times to get comment from the D-A and from the Sommers’ attorney, but have not heard back.

As New York City is now suing more than half of the counties in New York State to get them to accept migrants that the city itself cannot handle, other Rockland towns are praising the actions Rockland County and the town of Orangetown took early on to keep area hotels from becoming homeless shelters. Clarkstown supervisor George Hoehmann told “The Morning Show” Monday a Nanuet hotel was also approached by the city, but that hotel declined to participate…

Hoehmann said in response to the city’s attempt to move their migrants to Rockland, the town board strengthened their own laws to limit the number of consecutive days anyone can stay at local hotels to 29. Ramapo supervisor Michael Specht said as far as knows, none of the hotels in Ramapo was approached by the city…

Meanwhile, Rockland County Executive Ed Day is once again criticizing New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ management skills, after the Daily News recently reported the city can house some 15,000 people. The report said the city has nearly four-thousand Housing Authority units available and more than 26-hundred units for homeless New Yorkers vacant in the city’s housing network that are going unused.
