Appellate judges have decided that Clarkstown’s 2014 term limits law was illegally adopted. That’s according to the Journal News. That means Supervisor George Hoehmann, who helped craft the law back then, can run for a third term later this year. The panel cited the town’s failure to allow a public referendum before implementing the law. The Rockland County Business Journal says the case has already been appealed to New York’s highest court, the New York State Court of Appeals, but it’s not clear who appealed it or even if the court will hear the case. Hoehmann could not be reached for comment.

Orangeburg Hotel Loses Permit to Operate; NYC Still Tight-Lipped About Plans Throughout Region
Another Hudson Valley hotel could be next to get migrants that the city of New York can’t handle themselves. The city of Yonkers is the latest to be considered for migrants to be shipped upstate from the city, perhaps as early as yesterday, though as of this morning they hadn’t arrived yet. That’s according to News 12. They still hadn’t been sent to Orangeburg, though legal action by the county might have prompted the city to abandon those plans. Meanwhile, the Armoni Inn and Suites in Orangeburg was forced to close late last week after their permit to operate expired. In Orange County, the New York Post reported 20 veterans were being kicked out of three hotels to make room for migrants from the city, including the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, and in Middletown, the Super 8 and Hampton Inn & Suites. News 12 reported two couples’ wedding guests’ reservations at Crossroads were cancelled just days before their weddings, also to free up space for migrants. Orange County reportedly filed lawsuits Friday to keep the hotels from accepting migrants and to prevent the city from setting up homeless shelters in the county. The New York Post said at least 75 migrants will be staying temporarily in a public school gym in Coney Island. Late last week three Hudson Valley congressmen called for President Joe Biden to declare a state of emergency due to the situation. Representatives Mike Lawler, Pat Ryan, and Marc Molinaro also asked FEMA to step in and provide assistance.
Rockland Granted Temporary Restraining Order Against NYC to Prevent Use of Area Hotels as Homeless Shelters
Rockland yesterday was granted a Temporary Restraining Order in New York Supreme Court, prohibiting New York City and Mayor Eric Adams from using the Armoni Inn and Suites in Orangeburg or other hotels and motels here as a shelter for 340 male migrants. Rockland County Executive Ed Day said the county already has a severe housing crisis, and to quadruple the number of homeless overnight, would only make it worse. 97th District Assemblyman John McGowan, whose district covers Orangetown, told “The Morning Show” Thursday Rockland helps many people all the time…

Orangetown Gets Temporary Restraining Order to Keep NYC from Sending Migrants to Orangeburg
Still no word on whether the migrants seemingly destined for a hotel in Orangeburg from New York City have arrived. The Town of Orangetown reportedly secured a temporary restraining order from a Rockland Supreme Court judge last night to prevent the Armoni Inn & Suites from taking in the migrants that Mayor Eric Adams wants to send to Rockland. Both Rockland and Orange counties have enacted States of Emergency to try and prevent the city from shipping the migrants to the suburbs. Callers to “The Morning Show” yesterday weighed in on the national news story unfolding right here in our own backyard. One caller wondered why the bulk of the concern seems to be over whether the men may have criminal records…
Westchester County Executive George Latimer said in a press conference Monday that unlike Rockland and Orange counties, he would not be issuing a State of Emergency…
Latimer said he hoped to have a plan in place by the end of the week, in case Westchester is asked to assist. Governor Kathy Hochul, meanwhile, yesterday issued an Executive Order to help provide aid to asylum seekers as the federal Title 42 immigration policy is set to expire tomorrow. The Executive Order gives the state greater flexibility to get funding to municipalities to support asylum seekers. It also gives the state the ability to increase the number of National Guard service members to help with logistical and operational support. Hochul said the state continues to work with the city on finding sites in the city to shelter asylum seekers as they arrive and await legal work status.
