Orangetown’s former supervisor has a new job, and it’s here in the county. After serving one term, Chris Day decided not to run for re-election. Howard Phillips is the head of the Rockland Solid Waste Management Authority, and says he’s got the ideal experience to be director of inter-governmental relations…

We reached out to Day for comment, but he’s been even busier than usual lately, as he also became a dad again earlier this month.

Rockland County’s Continuum of Care is looking for volunteers for its annual “Point in Time” count of area homeless. The feds require the count in a single 24-hour period. Spring Valley Helping Hands program director Anna Kobelka says the count determines federal funding…

They also need volunteers to provide various services for the homeless that are counted, including barbers, hairdressers, nail technicians, physicians or anyone who can provide a service. 2020 marks 100 years since women got the right to vote in the United States. The 19th amendment was needed for that, and it was ratified on August 18th, 1920. “SuffrageForward–100 Years and Onward” is a year-long local effort to celebrate that landmark centennial. Rockland legislator Harriet Cornell plans this summer, to replicate a similar event she organized 25 years ago to celebrate the amendment’s 75th anniversary…

SuffrageForward’s kickoff event on Saturday, “Walk the Carpet,” honors female stage and screen icons. Event Chair Paulette Ross says the movement is designed to celebrate women’s empowerment…

New York’s governor presented his proposed budget for the 2021 fiscal year yesterday. Just shy of 179 billion dollars, Andrew Cuomo’s spending proposal includes 33 billion to combat climate change, 28.5 billion for education and 25 million to beef up security at non-public schools and cultural organizations that could be targeted for hate crimes…

On bail reform, Cuomo called it an on-going process and changes to it should respond to facts, not hyperbole. Western Ramapo and Orange County assemblyman Karl Brabenec says the law should have been presented to everyone for review first and voted-on as a stand-alone bill…

The state is also trying to grapple with a reported budget shortfall of a reported four billion dollars linked to increased Medicaid costs. Rockland County Executive Ed Day told “The Morning Show” it’s a time bomb waiting to blow…

The budget also cuts one billion dollars in assistance to local governments.
