Today is Election Day and there are contested races all over Rockland County for various offices, including town supervisors and boards, village mayors and trustees, the legislature, judges, clerks, superintendents of highways, and others. Many are contested races, but some, like the sheriff’s race, are uncontested. The county said 6,839 people participated during early voting. Poll sites are open today until 9pm.

Department of Social Services and Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland have opened the county’s warming center for the season, serving the homeless who need a warm place to stay overnight. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says people can also find other resources there in Pomona to help them…

Last season, between November 1st and April 30th, 54 people on average stayed at the warming center, up from 41 the year before. Known as “The Inn”, the warming center is at the county health complex in Pomona. Pickups are in Nyack, Haverstraw, Spring Valley and Pomona. Specific locations and times are as follows:

Nyack – 6:45 pm & 8:00 pm South Broadway and Burd Street (in front of the First Reformed Church of Nyack).

Haverstraw – 4:30 pm & 7:15 pm Village of Haverstraw Commuter parking lot (across from Village Hall).

Spring Valley – 5:30 pm & 8:15 pm Spring Valley Parking lot west of Key Bank on Route 59 by Planet Fitness.

Pomona – Department of Social Services 5:00 pm at 50 Sanatorium Road (at the bus shelter Monday-Friday only).

The Association for the Visually Impaired will be honoring the lives and accomplishments of Rockland County seniors with blindness or visual impairments at their annual “Greatest Generation” luncheon tomorrow in Tappan. Executive Director Beth Bate-DuBoff says “The 90 Plus Luncheon” will honor 20 area residents who have used the association’s services and continue to demonstrate a spirit, wisdom and zest for life…

Some 200 veterans were honored Sunday by a local lawmaker in Nyack. Rockland and Westchester state senator David Carlucci’s 8th annual Veterans Appreciation event at the Nyack Seaport offered a free brunch to area veterans who served in World War II up through the Iraq War, but they also discussed veterans’ issues…

Carlucci encouraged veterans to join his monthly Veterans Advisory Committee so they can further discuss legislation and services that affect them. He urged them to attend an upcoming New York State Senate hearing on veterans’ mental health. It’s being held at Clarkstown Town Hall on Wednesday at 10am. An unidentified Theills man hiking at Hi Tor state park in New City was sent to the hospital with head injuries after being rescued. News 12 says the man fell and landed on some rocks. He was rescued by the New City Fire Department and others. No word on his condition.
