The governors of New York and New Jersey signed legislation Monday to move the Hudson Tunnel Project forward despite the lack of federal funding. In a joint statement, the governors predicted the crumbling infrastructure could fail. The legislation, which passed both state legislatures in June, creates the Gateway Development Commission, a bi-state agency that can receive federal funding for an estimated $30 billion in projects, including fixing the tunnel and building an additional train tunnel. Tens of thousands of daily train commuters go through the century-old tunnel under the Hudson River that was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

The idea of dividing New York State into two states – upstate and downstate…comes around every now again. One of the problems is deciding where do Hudson Valley counties such as Westchester, Rockland and Orange belong? Are they upstate or downstate? Rockland Assemblyman Karl Brabanec, who represents portions of western Ramapo and Orange County, says both areas need each other, though sometimes it can feel lopsided…
According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, for at least 24 of the past 28 years, New York lawmakers, mostly upstate Republicans, have introduced bills that propose splitting New York into two separate states. Those bills have all died in committee.

The Rockland Boulders, with a three-game winning streak, looked to sweep the Sussex County Miners yesterday in Pomona. They had a lead in the eighth, but piled on some insurance runs…
And that was Mark Ernay on the Boulders Broadcast Network. The Boulders would score five in the eighth, Luis Cedenyo struck out the side 1-2-3 in the ninth, and the final score was 13-4, for the sweep of the first-place Miners. The Boulders are off today but start a four-game series against the Ottawa Champions at Palisades Credit Union Park with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 4pm.

The tropical heat and oppressive humidity helped O&R break their all-time record for weekend electric demand with a peak demand at 6 pm Sunday of 1,445 megawatts. The all-time highest demand day in O&R history came on August 2nd 13 years ago when the company recorded 1,617 megawatts of demand on its electric system. Cooler temperatures are expected over the next few days.
