A 15-year-old accused of fatally shooting an innocent bystander last month in Yonkers turned himself in early Tuesday morning. Published reports say Jamir Thompson’s accused of killing 18-year-old Marilyn Cotto Montanez while she and her 9 year-old sister were going to get pizza. Montanez was not the intended target of the shooting. Thompson is being held without bail. As a juvenile offender, he’ll face a maximum of seven and a half years to life in prison on a charge of second degree murder.

Rockland BOCES Family Resource Center Foundation Hosting Fundraiser Tonight in Haverstraw
The Rockland BOCES Family Resource Center Foundation is hosting a cocktail party fundraiser tonight in Haverstraw to help support three programs for its students. SUEZ Water and Cornell Cooperative Extension in North Rockland are co-hosting a free composting and water conservation “lunch and learn” program tomorrow. Rockland State Lawmaker Optimistic Harper’s Law Could Pass this Year
This could be the year that Harper’s law gets passed in New York. The bill is named for Harper Fried, killed in November 2016 when she was just three years old, after a dresser toppled onto her while she played in her room. Rockland Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski says the bill would require kids’ furniture to include tip-proof safety mechanisms…
Harper’s grandfather is Sandy Fried, former owner of the Spring Valley Tire Warehouse, and he says the tragedy that came to his family could happen to anyone, with similar injuries or deaths being suffered by kids every 24 minutes…
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says there were 195 fatalities between 2000 and 2016 because of furniture that tipped over.
Confirmed Measles Cases in Rockland Jumps to 215
The number of confirmed measles cases in Rockland is now up to 215, 82 percent of them are in kids 18 years old or younger. Rockland’s county executive re-instated the state of emergency late last month that had been shot down by a judge, but Ed Day says by and large, the local Orthodox community, where international visitors first brought the measles, has been cooperative…
