The longest-running, largest, single-day volunteer community service event in Rockland kicks off tomorrow at Palisades Center. Development Coordinator for United Way of Rockland, Dorothy Atzl, says volunteers in the “Spring Day of Caring” will help complete essential projects for Rockland County’s many health and human services providers…
The projects range from painting and power washing to carpentry repairs, things the organizations couldn’t otherwise afford to do on their own. The event begins with a “Kick-off Luncheon & Rally” at Palisades Center that celebrates hundreds of area volunteers. Teams of volunteers then head off to do their projects. The 24th Annual Ramapo River Watershed Conference is being held tomorrow morning at Ramapo College. Geoff Welch is one of the organizers of the event, and says the day kicks off with a presentation and discussion about logging in the forest highlands of New Jersey…
Friday’s event features various speakers, and includes presentations on “The Pompton Lake Case: DuPont Vs. NJ” and another on Pete Seeger, the singer and environmental activist who would have celebrated his 100th birthday tomorrow. The event begins at 9:30 and runs until about 4PM, and it’s in the Trustees Pavilion at Ramapo College in Mahwah. If you’ve got an electric car you might want to take note – charging stations are now available in the town of Orangetown. Supervisor Chris Day says they’re now active in downtown Pearl River near the train station and in Sparkill’s Depot Square…
Pearl River also now has a mobile pay system in case you don’t want to use quarters in their old-fashioned meters to pay for parking. Day says there’s an added charge for the convenience of using your mobile phone.

An SUV rolled into the creek between the Rockland County Courthouse and the County office building in New City yesterday afternoon. The driver reportedly got out of her car to put a package in a FedEx drop-off box, but the car was apparently left in “Drive” instead of “Park” and it started to roll away. Luckily, no one was injured. The SUV was removed from the creek.
