Rockland is looking to establish a Comprehensive Water Conservation Plan and organizers are hoping to get area residents to participate in the process. A workshop is being held this week to determine how Rocklanders use water and the best ways to conserve it. A bill to fully fund the Compensation Fund was proposed after it was revealed last month that rewards to 9/11 first responders and survivors had to be cut due to cash shortfalls.

An area lawmaker is calling for accountability when it comes to delivering state grants to local districts. North Rockland State Senator James Skoufis will be introducing legislation that would prohibit the practice of anonymous legislative grants. Senator Skoufis says there was only one grant that was not attached to a specific representative, and it went to the Orange County village of Kiryas Joel…

Skoufis is the new chairman of the Senate’s investigations committee. He says every community should play by the same set of rules.

A 34 year-old Hyde Park man has reportedly been arrested for mailing letters with white powder along with a note suggesting it was Anthrax to about a dozen federal offices in New York and Connecticut, including the West Nyack Social Security office. Jason Pantone was charged last week in Albany. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the powder tested has so far come back negative. Pantone faces up to five years in prison.

One of the candidates for Rockland District Attorney recently made an appearance on the Haitian-language program “Radio Panik” here on WRCR. Retired judge Victor Alfieri, a former assistant D-A and assistant public defender, said he wants assistant D-As to have offices in each community…

In addition to Alfieri, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, former prosecutor Patricia Gunning, retired State Supreme Court Judge Thomas Walsh, and retired U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps attorney Michael Diederich are all running in the Democratic party primary being held this June.
