The scientist who coined the term “Global Warming” and did most of his studying right here in Rockland County died Monday. Wallace Broecker first came to what is now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades in 1952 as a summer intern. In 1975, Broecker was among the first scientists to predict an imminent rise in earth’s temperature due to human output of carbon dioxide…  

Broecker’s ideas were taken up and wildly exaggerated in the 2004 movie The Day After Tomorrow. They were more credibly explained in possibly the only pop song about physical oceanography, “Uncle Wally’s Tale,” by Broecker’s brother-in-law Tom Chapin, Harry Chapin’s brother. Broecker was 87.

A patient at the Rockland Psychiatric Center faces 25 years in prison after being convicted of manslaughter Tuesday. Rockland County’s District Attorney says 54 year-old Billy Pugh attacked another patient, Ronald Randolph, in July 2017, punching and stomping on his head numerous times while he was unconscious. Pugh will be sentenced on May 14.

A sports venue consultant hired by the town of Ramapo to give his opinion on how to squeeze more money out of the ballpark is expected to come to town next month and see the place up close and personal. Town communications director Phil Tisi says Dan Barrett has worked with many professional sports clubs over the years…

The ballpark will host the 2019 All-Star Game between the Can-Am League and the Frontier League. It’ll be the first time the two Independent Professional leagues face each other.

New York’s governor last week signed the Child Victims Act. The law strengthens child abuse laws in the criminal and civil codes. Though the law extends the statute of limitations for crimes against children, Rockland State Senator David Carlucci says the law doesn’t go far enough…

Governor Andrew Cuomo says it was the ones who did talk who helped to shape the new law… 

The bill gives victims until their 28th birthday to seek felony charges, their 25th birthday to seek misdemeanor charges, and their 55th birthday to bring a civil suit.
