The Dow Jones rose almost 92 points yesterday to close at 23,879.12. 

An Orangetown man was arrested but is now out on bail after various illegal weapons were found in his home. Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco says a joint operation between his office, the Orangetown Police, NYPD, the Las Vegas Metro PD, and the Southern Nevada Counter-Terrorism Center led them to 66 year-old Paul Elmowsky Jr, of Grandview. Falco says Elmowsky drew police scrutiny after leaving several legally-registered weapons in different Las Vegas hotels…

It was back here in Rockland that police then reportedly discovered a stash of illegal weapons allegedly belonging to Elmowsky. Falco says he has no known connection to terrorism, though the investigation is ongoing. Vegas police were understandably on edge with the find…you’ll recall 58 people were killed in October 2017 when a gunman opened fire on a crowd at a music festival on the Las Vegas Strip.

Many area lawmakers were sworn in this week. Rockland Senator David Carlucci, the new head of the state Senate’s Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee, was sworn in on Tuesday in New City at Jawonio…

In his swearing-in ceremony, Republican Assemblyman Colin Schmitt of the 99th District, which covers Stony Point and parts of Orange County, acknowledged that his party’s way of thinking was, for the most part, rejected by voters on Election Day…

Locally, the town of Orangetown held its re-organization meeting Tuesday night. First-year supervisor Chris Day said one of his goals this year is to make area roadways safer…

Day touted first-year successes, including a lower tax rate, a new film-permitting process and the start of two new projects — a new town hall and a town community center.   

Memorial Drive near the Mahwah River in Suffern is being converted to a one-way street indefinitely beginning today due to soil erosion. Suffern officials say the roadway will be evaluated and then stabilized. Signage will direct traffic from Orchard Street towards Utopian Avenue. 

New York State has many political parties. We all know about the Democrats and Republicans, but others have names that typically reflect their positions, such as Constitution, Communist, Green, Liberal, Libertarian and others. Among the others is the “Independence” party, which North Rockland Senator James Skoufis says confuses people into thinking the party is “independent”…

Skoufis cites a recent Daily News poll that found that 85% of 200 voters they surveyed registered in the Independence party believed they were independent of any party affiliation. A representative from the Independence Party could not be reached for comment.
